Taqueria "Mamichi" - DEFINITELY worth a trip to the Colosio!!!

Driving around and exploring one night, I had a bit of the "munchies" and decided to try a new taqueria. I was tooling around the Colosio and noted an intersection with a number of open restaurants. While most of them were empty, one was extremely busy, even at midnight! Given my tendency to be such a follower(after all, I WAS eating at midnight in the Colosio with all the other touristas! ), I went to the crowded restaurant. Good choice!

First of all, how to get there: Taqueria Mamichi is located on 30th Ave, exactly one kilometer north of the intersection at 38th street. Specifically, the restaurant is on the corner of 30th Avenue and Avenue de Colosio. You will find a giant statue in the middle of the intersection:

As you pull up to the intersection, look to your right and you will see Taqueria Mamichi:

This was a lovely little taqueria with a large assortment of tacos, tortas, sopes, huaraches, etc. There were many different toppings, salsas, condiments, etc and they all seemed extremely fresh. I noticed they were doing a brisk trade, even at midnight, so the food did not look like it was sitting around very long (this is always a good sign for me in regard to freshness). Here is a picture of their food case as well as the nice senorita working in the kitchen:

On this, my first (but certainly not last) visit, I tried the tacos de cabeza de puerco (pig brains) as well as the picadillio (mixed ingredients with meat, corn, etc.) Both tacos were delicious and full of flavor. The tortillas were warm and soft, and the fillings were full of flavor. The cabeza was rich and meaty with a somewhat chewy texture, but not unpleasantly so (unlike the udder tacos at Tacos Gomez which were too rubbery for my taste). The picadillo was VERY tasty! Lots of flavor and spice, but not so picante. Here are my tacos:

I also had a sope con pollo. This sope was a thick corn tortilla topped with beans, cheese, marinaded chicken, lettuce, and a dab of media crema! Que rica! This was some of the BEST Mexican food I’ve yet to have in Playa!

On top of everything else, the people (both the women working and the other customers) were all VERY friendly and seemed genuinely impressed and surprised that I was a tourist eating at "their" place, using their language and enjoying their food. In every way, this was one of my best dining experiences on this trip. I’m looking forward to going back and bringing family and friends. There is a LOT of stuff on the menu I still want to try!

Long story short - its worth the trip. And hell, if I’m in town, look me up and I’ll join you!

I have my doubts about "cabeza de cerdo" being equal to "pig brains".

Cabeza is just the head, when you ask for brains you say: "sesos".
Of course I can be wrong, it depends mostly on the restaurant.

Yes, of course its possible that it was just meat from the head. The only thing is, I had pork cheeks tacos at carnicaria "El Duro" just a day or two before, and the meat was totally different. The meat in this taco from Mamichi was richer and heavier, more like sweetbreads.

While this was one of my favorite restaurants from this trip, be sure to keep an eye (or brain, or cheek, etc.) out for my report on "El Duro" to follow. With pictures!

I love your food reports. Have you seen on the travel channel "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmer. He was eating brains in Spain and many other really "odd" , but "interesting" food items.

You are VERY brave!

Stewart. I love your daring and exploration and willingness to search around for the serendipidy that can lead to great finds. I am usually with other folks who are more afraid of the unknown and they won't let me stop at these places. Your finds make me want to explore the colosio a lot more. Kepp finding new places (but you can keep the pig brains to yourself, thank you).

Thank you for your kind words! I also like your phrase, "searching for serendipity." Perhaps I will use it as the title for my book that I'll write one day!

Many, many places I wanted to try, especially in the colosio.

There was one place in particular I saw that advertised that it specialized in several different types of pozole. Here in Houston, we just have... pozole! I would like to see what types of varieties it comes in. It was on 30th ave, somewhere along the northern area, past mega, but not as far as Mamichi.

As far as the pig brains go... They actually were very good. I don't know if you like sweetbreads, but they had a similar flavor and texture. Not quite as "earthy" as organ meats, but somewhat similar, and with a somewhat lighter texture than, say, liver... I certainly don't blame you for passing on it though! Anyway, there were PLENTY of good choices for food there. I was actually pretty surprised by the variety of their kitchen, actually!

My friend you are improving your food trip reports day by day, I think that I don´t need to do a research trip in August as you are already taking care of that department, .

As I never try the organs and parts other than steaks, I´m of no help in this area, I know the names, but can't tell you the consistency, flavor or texture of each part (and there are lots of 'em: trompa, cachete, nana, suadero, sesos, etc).

I'll make a deal with you, okay?

You come down in August, and we'll load up the car and go cruise for a couple of hours to scout and try some new places together. My treat.

Sound like a plan?

Funny, just as I was talking to my paralegal about some of my dining adventures, she told me about this guy and his show then I logged on and saw your post!

Haven't seen it, but it seems up my alley. I'll try and TIVO it!

Of course, I don't like every new food I try, but I always enjoy the experience of trying something new!

Sounds like a scary plot for a horror movie: August, plenty of heat, all the wimmins unleashed roaming free in the Riviera Maya, Stewie munching his way up to the last tiny corner, brrrrrrr.

I think that we need Dpreefer to also join us, it would be an intersting research trip, I will take the pictures and look at your faces

So, which McD should be the first we try?

The only time I go into a Mc Donalds (especially abroad) is to use their bathroom

My son already wants to try the pig brains. He'll eat anything. I'm not that brave. Besides, I don't eat pork.
