survey re (dis)satisfaction with global leaders

The fine folks at the Pew Research Center have just released their 5th or 6th annual report on international views of world leaders, based on 45,000 in-depth interviews in 47 countries. A summary and various .pdf report links are available on the Pew site; NPR also has this report on it.

An excerpt from the latter:

Although anti-Americanism is still extensive, the image of other world powers is falling as well, a new global opinion survey finds.

"There's not much comfort with the global powers-that-be," Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, tells Robert Siegel.

In the current survey, favorable ratings of America are lower in 26 of 33 countries for which trends are available. The image of China, too, is slipping among most advanced nations, while the survey found a mixed review of Russia.

"Specifically, [Russian President] Vladimir Putin's negative ratings have soared, and now there's as much lack of confidence in him worldwide as there is in President [George W.] Bush," Kohut says.

At the same time, Kohut points out that while people outside Russia lack confidence in Putin, the Russian leader enjoys a "great deal of capital in Russia, and even in some neighboring states," such as the Ukraine.

This stands in contrast to Bush, who receives a 45 percent approval rating from Americans, versus 84 percent for Putin among Russians. [ ]

More proof that people love to hate the top dog. China is rising, so more people dislike them now than before, now when they are getting harder to ignore and more powerful all the time.

I know what you mean. Being a visionary myself, I've been boycotting chinese food for a long time.

Have you checked on how they think the newly elected congress is doing? At least it took Bushy 7 years to achieve this rating, the Dems have done in much much faster!

Putonghua or Standard Mandarin is the official national spoken language, although autonomous regions and special administrative regions have additional official languages. For example, Tibetan has official status within the Tibetan Autonomous Region and Mongolian has official status within the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. Hong Kong and Macau not only have English and Portuguese as official languages respectively, Cantonese is a de facto official spoken Chinese variant.
