Russia is laying claims to the North Pole.

Heck I always thought it was a part of Canadian territory. They might want to advise ol Saint Nick about this.....

Russia lays claim to the North Pole - and all its gas, oil, and diamonds | the Daily Mail

Doesn't surprise me...Oil & Gas in Russia is on track to boom...Just ask my poor hubby who has been working over there the last 2 winters...They realize what a powerful commodity the all mighty oil is!!

Nobody has successfully laid claim to anything yet...

Quote:

The claim is likely to provoke an outcry from green groups but there is also Russian opposition.
Sergei Priamikov, of Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, said the notion was "strange" and warned other countries could make counter claims.
Canada "could say that the Lomonosov ridge is part of the Canadian shelf, which means Russia should in fact belong to Canada, together with the whole of Eurasia", he observed drily. A diplomatic source said that Russia was "seeking to secure its grip on oil and gas supplies for decades to come. Putin wants a strong Russia, and Western dependence for oil and gas supplies is a key part of his strategy. He no longer cares if his strategy upsets the West".
This has been brewing for a while now, along with who controls the shipping routes that are going to be opening up in the Arctic above Canada because of melting ice.

Of course we have the biggest reason to claim those, which is one of the factors why Canada along with Russia stands to get the most economic advantages out of global warming.

Canada relative winner from warming globe

I hope this doesnt become a real "problem" issue with Russia trying to play hardball...we have enough issues to deal with already.

See I told you we should not have removed the covert army we put in place in the sixties and seventies in Canada that was meant to repel an invasion by the North Vietnamese. Soon Canadians will be getting the idea they can have their own foreign policy.

I am not too sure our 'tin pot army' could withstand a wave of Russians, alas. They sorta outnumber us.
We'll just try being nice...it's worked okay so far.

I'd rather they get their oil from there than from the Middle east...great competition for them and a little less income to support those Jihads.

um, that it's tough (and pretty unlikely) to lay a claim to anything when your population/economy/military is virtually non existent.
