Woman and child kicked off plane..what do you think?
Thursday, July 12, 2007
ATLANTA — The mother of a 19-month-old boy says she and her son were kicked off a plane after she refused a stewardess' request to medicate her son to keep him from talking. Kate Penland, who lives in Gwinnett County in suburban Atlanta, said she and her son, Garren, had boarded the Continental Express plane last month after an 11-hour delay in Houston on an Atlanta-Oklahoma flight. Garren kept saying, "Bye bye, plane," Penland recalled. And she said the stewardess objected. "At the end of her speech, she leaned over the gentleman beside me and said, 'It's not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up,"' Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta. When Penland asked the woman if she was kidding, she said the stewardess replied, "You know, it's called baby Benadryl." "And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to drug my child so you have a pleasant flight,"' Penland told the TV station. Penland said other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, and the flight attendant announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane. I was crying, I was upset and I was thinking, 'What am I going to do? I don't have anything with me, I don't have anymore diapers for the baby, no juice, no milk," Penland said. The young mother said she later learned the flight attendant told the pilot that she had threatened her. Penland said that never happened. Express Jet Airlines released a statement saying, "We received Ms. Penland's letter expressing her concerns and intend to investigate its contents." Express Jet did not immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press. A fellow passenger told WSB none of the other passengers had problems with Garren and that Penland never threatened the flight attendant. Personally I think the stewardess should be out of a job. At least the kid wasn't screaming. |

I agree with kicking them off. It does however tug at the heartstrings due to the "yacker" being so young.
I would like to see more people getting kicked off. For example, the bigmouths who say things like "oh, no! This is a (727, 737, A320 etc)....these thing always crash..!" Kick em off! I would also have a zero tolerance for drunks. Kick em off! Whats that sir, your drunk and roudy with your friends and you won't put your shirt back on....? Kick em off! ....I could go on... ... |

I would of kicked the stewardess off the plane, how rude can someone be!!! No job for her at the end of the day, especially for lying about being threatened.
Chock up one vote for the mom and kid here. |

I had heard the mom and son were in the middle and window seat and there was a man in the aisle seat that the flight attendant had to lean over so she could talk to the mother. I wonder if he's been interviewed. He would have heard everything!
They were discussing it on a radio show this morning and the radio personalities were definitely thinking the mother was nuts: "Oh SURE, the flight attendant suggested drugging the baby... we have some extra Benedryl for you up heeeeere." They said people wouldn't think about suggesting that. I thought, "Scads of people know the Baby Benedryl trick. Just not everyone chooses to use it. You DJ's are clueless." |

I used to be annoyed with kids crying or being somewhat of a pain on a plane, but I'm glad I was never vocal about it, amazing how the perspective change when you have your own kids!!!
Now when I fly, even on my own and a kid is crying, I get jealous because my kids used to cry now and then on the plane and it makes me miss them more. They're babies/toddlers, they don't know better, I can't believe the stewardess was that ignorant. Blows me away. |

That's the nice thing about thing about flying in and out of Salt Lake City.
When half the plane's passengers are under 6, chances are remote that your kids are going to be the worst behaved. |

I am reminded of the song by the Replacements.
Waitress In The Sky Lyrics Artist: The Replacements Album: Tim She don't wear no pants and she don't wear no tie Always on the ball, she's always on strike Struttin' up the aisle, big deal, you get to fly You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky Paid my fare, don't wanna complain You get to me, you're always outta champagne Treat me like a bum, don't wear no tie 'cause you ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky And the sign says, "Thank you very much for not smoking" My own sign says, "I'm sorry, I'm smokin'" Don't treat me special, don't kiss my ass Treat me like the way they treat 'em up in first class Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear A real union flight attendant, my oh my You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky |

I agree, don't disturb the peace, but it is a compromise sometimes, and it obviously wasn't a big deal to the other pasengers. The child wasn't screaming or thowing up everywhere, totally uncalled for IMO. As civil people we should be accomodating to each other not throwing children and mothers off planes because the child wouldn't stop talking. Rediculous. IMO of course. |
