Big Don and Jamey Do PDC Trip Report
Finally our Trip Report.....You will find out later why it has taken me over a week to post it!!!
Day One : Sunday, July 1st Woke up feeling like I had a cold . Can't I just have one week of (no kids) fun a year? No matter, we were headed to PDC--Put a smile on and got in the car for the drive to Indy. Don drove, I slept .Best news--upgraded to first class! Let's get this party started! Booze was free-- I drank wine (to attempt to stay classy), and Don had vodka and tonics. Our meal was mystery chicken... ![]() But the dessert was yummy! ![]() My ice cream had the consistency of soup, but Don's was frozen solid, so like a good husband, he let me eat his. We arrived in Cancun at about 5pm. The last time I flew into Cancun I was the very first person in the custom's line. No so much this time.......... ![]() It was a 40 minute wait, which is SO frustrating because you feel like you have arrived in Mexico and you are ready to have fun! We got our luggage (yeah) and got the green light (double yeah). Our driver was waiting for us in the quagmire outside, and we were off to the Royal PDC! The Royal is a nice resort, we had a nice stay except for a few problems (more on that later). We were in Room 255, which is the last oceanview room before the rooms are ocean front. IMHO, it or Room 355 are the best non-oceanfront rooms to book, since you have a great view ![]() Nice view of the pool also ![]() As for the promised alcohol in the room, there was plenty, as well as welcoming champagne! ![]() ![]() ![]() We decided to venture out for dinner. For our first night, we ate at Pelicanos, since it is located on the beach, and we Midwesterners were anxious to see the ocean! I had a filet with prawns ![]() Don tried the fish dinner ![]() There were three cats that hung out at Pelicanos. Our waiter told us that the brown cat was the husband, and the two other cats were his wives. ![]() The food was good, nothing spectacular, but good. The filet was probably 5 oz, which was enough for me, but Don thought the portions were small at all of the restaurants (except for at the buffets). We put some of the fish down for the cats, but they did not eat it, which made me wonder about the fish! On the way back to the room, we met a couple who asked us to take their photo in return for taking a photo of us with our camera ![]() Turns out the couple was from Indy! Small world! We toured the resort and went to the tequilia bar. Don had a shot of Don Julio Reserve (in a silver plated bottle), which cost him $48 USD. He said it was the best tequilia he had ever had. For the entire week, we stopped in EVERY store selling tequilia to see how much they were selling it for-- the lowest price we found was $350.00 USD. It was good tequilia, but not that good! It was a full moon that night in Playa ![]() After the morning drive to Indy, flights, etc, after a few drinks we were tired! We went back to the room and "christened" the hot tub ![]() ![]() The hot tub was great, but did take 30 minutes to fill up. We had left the sliding glass door open to listen to the ocean, and the humidity combined with the steam coming from the hot tub made the marble hotel room floor as slick as an ice rink! Light out at midnight on our first night in PDC!!!

Hola to my peeps Katie and the Redheads! Had a great time with you guys on the 4th!
Day 2: Monday July 2, 2007 1:46am: I wake up b/c I feel like my head weighs 100 lbs. Forgetting that the floor was an ice rink, I slid into to the vanity to find some Sudafed. Blow my nose a 1000 times. 3:13am: Wake up b/c my lip feels wet...realize my nose is dripping. Floor is still an ice rink so I take slow baby steps into the bathroom and blow my nose only 500 times. Search for Tylenol PM--cannot locate. WTF??? 5:02am: Wake up again. Decide to stuff tissues up my nose to stop drip. At least the floor is dry now. 7:30am: EVEN THOUGH WE ARE ON VACATION Big Don wakes up happy and chipper. I think I may have said something unkind to him. He decides he wants to go work out at the hotel gym. Can't understand why I am not interested in going. As if. But--He did not pack his running shoes. Against my better judgment (Don speaks cero Espanol), and really just to get him to stop talking to me, I suggested he go to Wal-Mart to purchase some shoes and Tylenol f-ing PM. He takes a cab to Walmart and I go back to sleep. He returned safely about an hour and a half later. Mind you we usually do not shop at Wal-mart in Fort Wayne b/c it is dirty and the lines are always long, etc, but Don LOVED the Wal-Mart in PDC. The cab driver who drove him to Wal-Mart went with him into the store and helped him buy what he wanted except he forgot the Tylenol f-ing PM, but did bring me some cough drops! He did get some shoes, but the funny thing is that Don is 6'4" and wears a size 13 shoe, which apparently they do not sell in Mexico. I think the shoes he ended up with were a size 10. Don goes to the gym wearing shoes 3 sizes too small and I try to go back to sleep. I finally get up around 10am to get ready to go to the beach. However, a torrential thunderstorm was brewing in PDC.... ![]() It rained hard for about 2 1/2 hours. Don fell asleep, and I ended up watching some movie about Dale Earnhardt on the "American" HBO. I actually cried at the end: Dale goes to heaven and in his heaven he is a little boy hugging his dad at the track. I cannot believe a NASCAR movie brought me to tears, must have been because of sleep deprivation and cold medicine. After the storm, the sun comes out and we go to the RPDC beach. The staff was really attentive both at the beach and pool with serving drinks to you at your chair. One complaint I had about the RPDC is that they do not serve food at the beach or pool. Nothing beats guacamole and chips with a cold beer with a lime in it at the beach! ![]() ![]() We went back to the room to dress up to go to the Maria's for dinner. I had read on TripAdvisor that Monday is Lobster night--TRUE! Maria's is the nicest of the restaurants at the RPDC. They have a decent wine list (for an additional fee) and a great salad/cheese bar. Not suprisingly, we both had the lobster. It came with a small filet. There were two lobster tails under the filet and it was all delicious! ![]() ![]() Feeling fortified by the great dinner and wine, we decided to stroll on 5th AVE. The best thing about the RPDC is its location, location, location: steps away from 5th AVE. I was suprised to see how much growth there had since we had visited PDC in 2004: the north end of 5th was new and cool, too! My favorite store ![]() Don's favorite store ![]() It started raining, so we ducked into a bar, which I cannot remember the name of....there was an American girl there singing cover songs, and she was really good. After a few beers (Pacificos) , it stopped raining and we found a pharmacy. I was looking for Tylenol PM, no dice. But they did have something called Nocsin PM. It had "Noc" for night, PM, and diphenhydramine in it, so I bought it. It worked like a charm! Thanks for all the TR compliments. On the third day we went on the Tulum and Beyond tour...stay tuned! |
