The "they're just being kids" is not an excuse for bad behaivor. Bad behavior is learned from the parents. Maybe, the mother did not prepare the children for take-off...Maybe their ears were hurting from the pressure. How does a 2 and 4 year old end up on the floor..they should be strapped in. Hust all seems a little bizarre. |

![]() Maybe I'm just old school but I think people have gone overboard on the child abuse thing, to the point sometimes of not discipling their kids at all or very little - what the hell is a "time out"? ![]() I had a mom who today probably would have been arrested too!! But she knew the difference between child abuse and a slap on the butt. And btw I never hit my own kids, but they knew I could if I wanted to...

It seems like the people who call a little smack on the bum or hand 'abuse' are completely out of touch and melodramatic. I think it devalues the importance and seriousness of TRUE abuse. (Kind of like a woman who gets drunk and goes home and gets talked into having sex with her date, crying rape the next day- which should really annoy women who are really rape victims.) (not saying anything about this situation- this woman sounds like she totally lost it on her poor kids. )

Just go in Walmart any day after work and you will see at least one woman losing it with her kids !!! (I dont believe in cursing, spanking or slapping kids as a means of discipline)
Of course my parents believed in spanking and we all turned out ok (mostly). ![]() I am very glad some one intervened for the kids on the plane. Gracie and I heard a woman verbally cutting down her little girl in a restaurant a few weekends ago, it was way worse than any beating.

While one person's discipline might be another person's abuse, in the case cited by the OP the woman was observed by several different passengers as appearing intoxicated and repeatedly hitting and screaming at her kids.
Now is it possible to say in today's "overly PC world" that the several different individuals who observed this woman - who really just swatted her kids on their butts in an attempt to discipline them - all arrived erroneously at the shared opinion that this woman was crossing the line and considered the "spankings" abusive. Maybe. But a simpler explanation here is that the woman was abusing her kids. And for those here who said (or are thinking) "Hey in today's world my mom/dad would have been arrested for child abuse, too". Really? Would this description really fit a scene from your childhood: mom/dad appearing intoxicated and repeatedly hitting you and screaming at you until you were huddled in a corner? |

Actually, it all wasn't as bad as it sounds, she didn't really beat us but it usually only took that look to make us run and hide...
