Obesity Contagious?

Ya know, this is something I always wondered about.
Quote:
The study, published in the July 26 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that obesity is "socially contagious," as it can spread among individuals in close social circles. The likely explanation: A person's idea of what is an appropriate body size is affected by the size of his or her friends.

Conversely, the researchers found that thinness is also contagious.
I can't help wonder which condition is the dominant one in most relationships.

I don't know if it's contagious, but I do know that it spreads. Just last week, it went from my gut to my ass.

All my close friends are thin. It's a metabolism thing. Of course, all those fast food joints don't help. We are really seeing alot of fat kids today....and It's sad that kids can't run the streets anymore and work it off. Video games ...bad.

"The Law of Conservation of Energy and Matter states that energy or matter cannot be created or destroyed, but can change its form.

The total quantity of matter and energy available in the universe is a fixed amount and never any more or less."

Sort of like The Universal Law of Flab, which I discovered. The amount of blubber in the universe is a constant, merely its distribution varies, from person to person, or from location to location on the same individual. (I should write a book.)

I bet there is something to do that, sure....same old story of peer pressure, and like being attracted to like. Not a hard and fast rule, but you do see it a lot.

I know in my group of female friends, if one woman loses weight, a few others who maybe need to drop a few start feeling the pressure to work out and diet and do the same…and by the same token if you see your friends gain a few and not worry about it, it almost gives you 'permission' in a sense to let yourself go a bit? It seems to go in cycles oddly enough.

Just read this part:
Quote:
Among siblings, if one becomes obese the likelihood of their sister or brother becoming obese increases by 40 percent. Among spouses there is a 37 percent increased risk.

... Among sisters, the risk was 67 percent.
I've got one sister about 100 lbs heavier and one about 100 lbs lighter. Guess it doesn't apply to our family. Or else it explains why I'm so confused.

Come up here baby. We'll help you lose no less than 1/2 pounds in no more than 8 weeks.

We'll have fun doing it, though.

Doesn't apply to my family and friends either. All my friends are thin, pretty much. All my family are thin. Hubby is heavy like myself, but praps not AS heavy as I am. My kids are thin, one more than the other.

Praps I'm on the other side of the bell curve.
