Just a few:

Neil Young - the angry and defiant tone of Ohio

Eric Clapton and Duane Allman - doesn't matter who played what Layla

Peter Green - the spanish flavored guitar in Oh Well part 2

Jimi Hendryx - no comment necessary Voodoo Chile Slight Return

Yeah, but ain't it fun to try, anyway? And you know, you can in fact take the context of the song into account -- I did in my very first post in talking about Gilmour, and many others have.

And with that in mind...

Ya left out Daniel Lanois, there, amigo! Let me just get that board for ya, though, shall I? I was just listening to the title track from his

For the Beauty of Wynona

and would like to nominate that. Lots of good guitar stuff all over that album.

Another one from my man Adrian Belew, as well, this time The Great Divide off Talking Heads' oh so excelente effort

Remain In Light

On a tangent off Manitou's comment, I've been thinking what is needed is different categories, something like
technical wizardry (maybe that Van Halen track)
atmospheric (Daniel Lanois would be good at that)
what jazz guys call playing "out" (Belew would be good there)
melodic (many of the most typical solos we think of: Gilmour, Page...)
unusual effects/sound (probably Hendrix is the king here)
etc.
Dunno -- just thinkin'.

Sadly, no. Too much other stuff going on. That would've been a great show I always enjoy seeing Learning to Live done live too.

I laugh because I specifically thought of putting it in -- think I'd already written it, in fact -- when I thought I'd be violating my own call for specifically rock genre performance.

Well, this probably doesn't qualify, cause technically it's not really a solo, and there was a lot of studio magic performed, but for suaveness, staying power and technical awesomeness, the lick in Hotel California ranks right up there. Walsh and Felder turned some heads when that came out. Other favs....
I know a little-Skynard

Aw hell, there's too many!!!!
