Hey Dorish,
I agree completely with DJ. I would only do a tour if you are taveling long distances. Chichen Itza is SO worth the tour. We left at I think it was 8am and was back at the resort by 6pm. We got lunch at Chichen Itza and it was an amazing experience. It is only certain days, I think it was Mondays and Fridays or wednesdays and Fridays. Can't remember, it was only two days a week though. Otherwise do the rest on your own. It was WAY too hot for us to walk to the Dolphin Discovery so we took a taxi, $7. We didn't want to worry about chaining up the bikes while we swam with the dolphins. It is VERY close though. Tulum was beautiful but not in the same league in my opinion as Chichen Itza. If you have to choose, go to Chichen Itza. Otherwise, do the collectivo and go on your own. Just make sure you have pesos. I think it's one of the ONLY places in Mexico that does not take USD. We actually went to Tulum first thing in the morning as it opened. We beat the heat and the tour buses, spent only about an hour there, then went to Xel Ha for the rest of the day. I highly recommend that place too. |

I guess we were pretty fortunate last November as there was some tropical depression down in Guatemala that helped keep things a bit on the cool side (upper 70's and low 80's) so we pretty much walked everywhere.
