You could also use wrought iron or tin accessories...saw a very cool iron gate used in a yard as a backdrop for climbing plants. If you have a wall you can hang crosses, masks, mexican landscape art or an original painting by Popeye, the Playa.info artist! A gourd light would be cool! Also a chandelier of iron or tin would look nice.

Plant some palm trees or get some and put them in big pots. Hang a gourd lamp. Get one of those ceramic plaques that say "Bienvenidos mi casa es su casa". Lots of tropical flowers. Paint your fence (if you have one) a beach scene! Tile something (anything!) in saltillo tile! Hope this helps!

Palapas are nice, but you may want to think about how often you will have to replace the palms....

You could always plant a brownie tree.

There is a yard too but you cant see it in the shots. Its not that big but there is a grass area.

Now Matt wants to build a bamboo frame and fill in the patio with sand

I don't suggest sand in your backyard.
Neighborhood cats will use it as a litterbox.

I have thought of a palapa too...I would be afraid of fire danger though...lightning strikes, fireworks gone wrong, firedancers.

I would be concerned with how palapa-materials would be viewed by your insurance carrier, in terms of fire danger.

You already have a lot of existing structure. Why don't you use trompe-d'oeuil paint effects to simulate what you want? Paint the underside of any roofing structure you add to look like a wicker weave ... paint all the structure that's currently white a nice rattan brown, with a grayish grain added ... there are many different festive lighting sets now available for outdoor use ... hang pareos over the latticework ...

Ummmm judging by what he's shooting for, it might be easier to MOVE to Playa!

Seriously, with the existing structure, I'd go with a paint theme rather than gutting it and replacing with bamboo and palapas...minimal upkeep to a lot of upkeep. Sand....not unless you want to go through vacuums constantly...think of tracking all that indoors!

Just my $.02 worth.
