Saw the thread and wanted to chime in.
We live in Las Vegas and did the sand thing. "PGA" sand and we were assured cats would not use it as a litter box. They said, think about it....how many cats do you see on the golf course using the sand traps as litter boxes. They were right. There is something in the PGA sand cats do not like. The feel of the sand at night was great on your feet, but extremely hot in the day. We did not worry about the sand tracking in the house. We either just rinsed our feet off b/4 coming in or waited until they were dry. The wind was what caused us to remove the sand. It would blow into the pool and what a job for pool vacuum and my husband. The pool filters needed cleaning all the time. So...it was time to remove it. We put in the fake grass. Very nice, very clean, no maintenance, but it also gets hot in the heat of the day. We also hung a very colorful hammock bought in Playa. To cover the pool equipment my husband built a wall out of what reminds me of the old wooden telephone poles. He made the wall uneven purposely. It looks very cool and he is also going to build a ledge on it to resemble a standing bar and tack seashells, starfish, etc on it, giving a look of a pier. If I am ever successful on posting pictures, I could actually post few of the backyard. |

Don't know if you might get some ideas from this link that I found this morning but: Tropical Gardening: It's beginning to look a lot like the Tropics!
It's a tropical garden in Wichita, KS! |
