Can anyone of you good people recommend a hotel in San Francisco? You know, clean, not far from the sites, reasonable price etc.

I thank you in advance.

Where in San Francisco do you want to stay? Closer to the wharf or near Union Square?

Try this site. You can find reasonable hotels down near Fisherman's Wharf and just taxi or cable car to where you would like to go. Are you renting a car? You might be better off with the first two options unless you will be driving up the coast or over to Marin, Sausalito area.

If you decide to go closer to Union Square, be prepared to pay some higher prices. I believe I stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Union Square at over $200.00 easily a night.

Not sure we qualify as "good people" on this board but...here's our recommendation.

Whenever we go home to San Francisco (which is a couple of times a year) we stay at the Chancellor Hotel at 433 Powell Street (Chancellor Hotel on Union Square). It is an "old school" style San Franciscan hotel built in the early 1900s. Family owned, the service is extraordinary and the prices as good as you will find in SF. The rooms are small but very comfortable and clean. And they have a pillow menu from which you can select different types of pillows!!!

The Chancellor is right at the corner of Powell St and Post St on Union Square. If you have a window facing the Square you can open your window at night and hear the clang of the cable car bells (the Powell Street Line runs right past the hotel) and the occasional street musician playing sax. It is a fun walk over the hill to Fishermans Wharf, Chinatown or North Beach (or a five minute cab ride). It's about two blocks from Market Street. You don't need a car in San Francisco (walking and cabs will get you anywhere), but if you absolutely need one, the Chancellor has parking available--a rare commodity in San Francisco.

There is an excellent restaurant for breakfast and lunch in the hotel (Luque's) and a cute little bar (called the Clipper Ship) which is open in the early evenings. They have coffee, cookies and apples in the lobby 24 hours a day!! Nearby is Sears Fine Foods, the Cheesecake Factory, John's Grill, Harry Denton's Starlight Room and a host of other excellent restaurants within walking distance. Hell, it's San Francisco. All restaurants are excellent there!

We are going to be at the Chancellor ourselves in 48 hours. We're really looking forward to a few cool, foggy days after the heat we've had in Playa lately.

And if you get a chance, stop by the coolest bar in San Francisco, Amante, on Green Street near Columbus in North Beach. The owners/bartenders are all good friends and are regulars at the Luna Blue. Alfredo is the young cute one, Wizz is the funny one with the curly hair, Mike D is the old grouchy one with the Boston accent, Pat is the other (older) cute one, and shaved head Eric is the sweetest human being in the world. Ask Eric to make you a Beso Cubano (Cuban Kiss), a drink he invented in our kitchen in Playa del Carmen. And tell them we sent you. It might be good for a drink on the house. Or not.

We just returned from 5 days in San Fran. Stayed at the Monticello Inn at Union Square and about a block and a half from Market Street. Boutique hotel similar to the Chancellor and only a couple of blocks separates the two. Rooms had AC which was nice as the window opened, but since it faced the courtyard tough to get much of the breeze. Every afternoon from 5 - 6 pm they have wine and bread free in the library. Free continental breakfast with apples, bananas, croissants and other pastries, plus Starbucks coffee.
We had a room with King Bed (man was it comfy!). Nothing fancy, but very clean. Different days had different prices, but our stay averaged $125/night. We will return to the Monticello.
Enjoy your stay, so many things to do in and around the city. If you are considering a car, mass transit options are plenty and parking is expensive!
I'll post a report here soon.

Thumbs up Hotel Tomo in Japantown

Last time we were in San Francisco, we stayed at the Best Western Miyako Inn located on Sutter Street in Japantown. The Miyako is now called HOTEL TOMO . We LOVED the hotel AND the location. Mike loved the "Japanese" breakfasts at the hotel's restaurant.

It's just a quick bus ride away from Union Square. You could walk it if you wanted to. Buy a San Francisco Transit Authority Pass and go quickly and easily all over the city without the nightmare and $$$$$ of trying to park.

Hotel Tomo has some great reviews on Trip Advisor. We would most definitely stay here again. The neighborhood is safe, doesn't have the panhandlers of downtown locations, and there's some wonderful places to eat nearby. Be sure to check out HARRY'S BAR on upper Fillmore Street. It has terrific ambiance, terrific food and terrific drinks!

We've stayed at the Holiday Inn down by the wharf or the Best Western in that same area. We also stay in Vallejo and take the 45 minute $14 ferry ride across the bay.
The Vallejo hotels are cheaper and you don't have to worry about parking. The ferry drops you off at piers 1 and 39 or fisherman's wharf and takes you back all day long.

Hi Electra,
I was in San Francisco in June and stayed at the Parc 55 hotel, two blocks from Union Square. It'a a big hotel so you get great views from almsot every floor, the rooms are very nice, clean, modern, and I got a great deal, 113 + tax per night. I couldn't believe it's so cheap compared to Playa! It's like 20 meters from the BART (Powell street I think) so you get there easy from the airport, and you can walk everywhere. I'd stay there again when I go back (hopefully soon!!!!!!!!!!! I love San francisco wish I could live there a while!).
Have fun

I'd have to recommend the Radisson SAS across from Pier 39. It's an excellent location, on a night we would fall asleep and from our window we could see the lighthouse flashing on Alcatraz!
Also, its only a short tram ride up to Union Square...

Thanks for all the replies and great advice!
Many of the hotels listed are full on the weekend that we want to go! The only exception is the Radisson SAS). Yet that is NOT the biggest obstacle. Perhaps I am out of touch BUT the price for flight and/or hotel is just outragous!! Flight alone (non stop) would be ~$660 p/p withOUT taxes!! Hotel and flight would be ~$2100!! Furthermore we would be spending $$$ on sightseeing and meals.

I'm sorry but for ~$1000 more, 2 of us can go for 1 week to an all inclusive on the Mayan. Heck for ~$2800 we can stay a week all inclusive 4.5 star in Varadero!!

Lotta's fountain, Market street, The Golden Hydrant @ 20th and Dolores, Golden Gate, Alcatraz, China town et al.....will have to wait

What audacity to ask those prices!

I guess it's about supply and demand, and where you're flying from. I can get there a lot cheaper than that, but we drive 2 hours south to Seattle.

Sometimes you can't look at comparable pricing, you just have to figure out what you really want to do. For the cost of our recent trip through the Rockies, etc. we could have flown to Cuba for a week....but we decided this driving/sightseeing trip was more of a priority for us at this time. If San Fran becomes more of a priority for you, then you'll make a way to get there.
