hi Andy, I know this has nothing too much to do w/ the shelter, but could you please tell me what caused Peanuts walking probs? my 8mth old chi was diagnosed w/ intervertebral disk disease today, and i just wanted to know if peanut had the same, and if so any tips on how to slow the progression would be so great. thanks

Just an update on things, we recieved a call from the Municipio and a director there had summoned us to his office yesterday at 12 ... needles to say were quite concerned turns out this guy is an animal lover and had \heard about what we were doing thru the grapevine and wanted us to meet Sandra the lady who runs the parrera, turns out i already knew her as she was one of the volounteer vets at the Vida clinic, anyway we spoke at length and the upshot is that the Parrera is hugely underfunded and she gets so many dogs and pups in there which according to government rulings only have 3 days to be rehomed or reunited with thier owners before she has to put them to sleep, somthing which she finds very distressing but has no option, she has asked us to help, most of the dogs they recieve are too sick or unsocial to help but there are a few that she feels caqn and will make wonderful pets and of course there are the lost pets that she does not want destroyed so we will be now taking some of these pooches , we wish we could take them all but unfortunatly as you all knoe we have limited space at the shelter and not enough funds as yet to build the possible 10 extra pens that we have planned.
Well as you are all aware we seem to have a bit of a storm heading our way ,if and when it hits we will be taking all of the dogs and cats into the house where we have some safe areas, once ive prepped them, after its gone we will be taking a couple of dogs from Sandra to save them form being put down, one is a lovely little cocker spaniel ~dashund mix, the other a beautiful young Labrador so i will post the pics when they arrived.
Ok guys ive got lots to do before tues and i will try to get on line again in the next day or so, i just have to say again ..thankl you..thank you..thank you to all of you for your continuing help and support
Andy
What wonerful people we have living in Playa taking care of these animals!!!!!

Hey sis, I talked to Andy last night. He said what Peanut had was fused vertabrae...is that what your dog has? He also said that it wasn't this that caused Peanut's death, but that some other health problems he had were at fault. He also offered to give you Peanut's walker that he made.

What Tostada has is basically two bulging disks in her back, right now they are bulging outward but they could eventually move in towards her spinal cord causing paralasis(sp?). we caught this problem super early, seeing as she's show no signs of the problem, because i had a radiograph done to check for a possible obstruction. I will be starting her on the joint supplements as soon as they arrive to slow the progression of this disease and hopefully won't need the $3800 corrective surgery for many years. I was so scared and started to cry a the vets office when she pointed to the spine on the scan, my mind went straight to Peanut and not knowing if this is what stole him from Andy & Jen. thanks for letting me know big sis, and please let Andy know I appreciate the chair offerand if the time comes I will let him know, but I pray that it won't come to that.

Hi I spoke to Heather last night and she told me about your poor litle chi, Peanut had the same thing, he pretty much lost the use of his back end but was amazing in the wheelchair so maybe we can do somthing for your baby too, Paco was great when he did some unorthadox surgery which helped him to improve, Peanut unfortunatly had a pnumonia type infection which sadly killed him, if yours needed any surgery i think it would be far cheaper to bring the chi here to Paco, but as to any other advice , im sorry, i hope everything goes well for your baby if i can help in any way please let me know
Andy

Hi all
We are all ok here at the shelter, we had \a little bit of damage, a couple of roofing sheets came loose so the place flooded and lots of leaves and dirt but ive been on it all day and its pretty much cleaned up now, all the dogs and cats made it thru the wind \and rain fine tho a couple did get a little nervouse when it was at its worst, the rest slept thru the whole thing, but we still had a loit of "presents" to clean up this morning ...stinky... we did get a bit of a fright with Jody, she is always a quiet dog and a bit of a loner and she had hidden herself under the spare bed all night, but when i got her out this morning there was blood everywhere around\ a litre ...we rushed her to the vet on an emergency call and she was still bleeding heavily when we got there, the vet says it is a symptom of Erlichia so she has had a lot of meds and a transfusion and now we have to keep her quiet and try to get high protien food and gatorade into her along witha barrage of meds, its gonna be touch and go for a few days but we have our fingers crossed.
We also saw the little guy who had the leg operation and he will soon be coming to us along with a really cute Spaniel and possible a 2 year old Golden Retriever both who have been abandoned.
Well thats it for now, still no internet at home but im off to try and get that sorted in the morning.
