I forgot to mention that our good friend Karl met us at the airport and braved the weather and the traffic to take us from the airport to our car. What a great friend! Tasha slept through the night in her crate then went outside for a poop and pee.....had breakfast and a poopie followed soon after. Outside of course!

Microscope for Peanut Pet Shelter
Hi Andy and Jen:
I am looking at a twin-lens microscope on my desk with your name on it. It has a 10X and a 44X lens and a light source. It's a beaut. Our greenhouse manager gave it to me - says they don't use this style for classes any more. I need someone to mule it down to you all. What about George's new person? I think I recall you saying he/she was flying down to get the dog. The scope, wrapped, could easily fit in a carry-on. Can you contact them and connect us? I can ship it out to George's person right away. Let me know - Julie |

Wooohooo! I did it!!
After I came home from our two weeks in Playa, I wrote in to our local newspaper, The Vancouver Province, to their travel section. They have a regular column in their Sunday Travel section, "You Were There" where people write in with their trip report. Mine is going to appear in the paper on March 9th!!!
Here is what I submitted. If you have ever been to Mexico, you will know that there is a problem with a breed of dog not normally seen north of the 49th parallel, the Mexican Street Dog. It can be a mix of any breed you can imagine and there are always plenty of them. It is sad to think that there are so many stray animals, on the streets of every town in Mexico, without a home and someone to care for them. My Mexico, or where I love to go, includes a very special place in Playa del Carmen, The Peanut Animal Shelter and Kennel. In January, on one of my days in Playa, instead of basking in the sunshine, I was privileged to be a visitor at the shelter. It is run by a British couple, Andy and Jen and they have a number of supporters worldwide. It takes a special person to be able to open their heart and home to a full house of dogs and puppies! The kittens and cats are housed elsewhere as no self respecting cat would be able to tolerate that many dogs! thirty plus the puppies when I visited. They were full! no more room! ![]() Saturday is bath day at the shelter which is a way to help the animals socialize with lots of volunteers, and a clean dog is more adoptable should some kind soul happen along to adopt one instead of drop another one off! There are many success stories on their website The Peanut Pet Shelter and Kennel | Playa del Carmen, Mexico and there seems to be a never ending supply of puppies and dogs needing help. And, while I understand that a dog just isn't treated the same in Mexico as our pampered pooches here in Canada, the reality is that they are often 'just another mouth to feed' and are left to fend for themselves. ![]() While we were there, two quite young Chihuahua cross pups were brought in, one with an injured leg and both covered in fleas. The bath was ready and we gave them each a flea bath moments after they arrived, while discussing what they should be named. With sixteen puppies, there seemed no end to wriggling puppy bodies needing a shampoo and rinse. What fun for the volunteers! we were from the UK, Playa del Carmen, the US and Canada, all brought together because of our love for our four legged friends. ![]() I took down half a dozen collars and leashes to donate to the shelter and there is always a need for food, medicine and dollars to purchase more. They work very closely with a local veterinarian and I'm sure he likes to be paid for his expertise, although I think he is very happy to be helping someone who is making a difference on the streets of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Somehow the fundraising ideas just don't seem to be able to keep up with the expenses. ![]() We enjoyed our two weeks in the sunshine and after our visit to the shelter, it seemed that we noticed more dogs without collars (usually a sign that they are homeless) and we will always remember the heart breaker at Chichen Itza. An older female dog who appeared to be getting a spot ready to have more puppies. For her there are no rescuers, no one in the area of Chichen Itza is helping the stray dogs. There is no where on earth quite like the Mayan Riviera, the scenery, the Caribbean Sea, the people, the great restaurants, the atmosphere of holiday relaxation, the wonderful little boutique hotels along Quinta Avenida, we stayed at one, the Posada Mariposa, a small 26 room hotel overlooking the northern end of Fifth. And now my favourite vacation spot holds something more for me - a chance to give something back to the area. Have a look at the shelter website, maybe you will want to help too. |
