Your posts prove that all dogs need to be socialized well from a young age - both with other dogs and people. Getting a dog from Andy & Jen guarantees a well-socialized dog between the dog pack and the doggie washes! It helps to establish pack etiquette which is critical for a happy dog. Thanks for sharing your stories!
When Bronson (my 5 year old Rottweiler) was just 15 pounds and 13 weeks old, we brought him to a trainer. He did 4 or 5 private lessons then he did group lessons twice a week. At the end of group lessons there was play time. He learned to play with big dogs, little dogs, dominant dogs, submissive dogs and every breed & mixed breed you could name. He continued to participate in the training class for about 3 to 4 years and believe me, it was worth it just for the socialization! Even though we don't go to class anymore, he is still a well socialized dog, gets along well with others and loves, loves, loves people. The key to his success is that we knew from day one what type of behavior we expected from him and we demanded it. We learned how to deal with behavior problems by training an obedient dog from the earliest possible moment. My hard work has paid off by having a 130 pound Rottie who is a joy to have around. I never worry about aggression or bad behavior because I invested tons of time into his training (although I always keep a keen eye on both my dogs in any group situation, with dogs or people, to determine if I see any slight change in behavior just to be safe - as all dog owners should - especially the big boys!). It makes me so mad when I hear of people who get a dog, especially a large breed dog, and don't spend any time with formal training, exercise, or socialization and then wonder why their dog pulls them down the street, destroys the house, or is aggressive towards other dogs or people. Anyway, thanks for sharing! I love hearing your stories! |

We unfortunatly had only our 2nd return since we began the shelter, Sherry who was adopted last week had to come back as his new owner couldnt cope with her. Sherry and her litter mates, Marina, Romeo, Betsy and Thed are for some reason a lot more shy than the other dogs we have had here and really only respond to me, part of the problem is that they were all in quarentine for a very long time when they were tiny and all need a lot more time and tlc than our other dogs, im sure she and the rest will find new owners who can give them just that
![]() But that means along with a young female that i collected from Diego this morning we are at a record 50 dogs n puppies... its a relief that the new shelter will be built soon

Cat anyone?
I woke up this morning to find a tiny kitten on my doorstep, it had been left there overnight in a box with a blanket. I thought this only happenned in movies or cartoons but apparently this is a valid get-rid-of-your-pet technique in Villamar 2. We already have 2, full-grown cats at home, and they are not taking kindly to this morning's new addition to the family.
I am unsure if the peanut shelter even takes cats and if they can take him in, and i don't have time to read the 100+ pages of this thread to figure it out, so i am offering the cat to anyone who can give it a home. The cat in question is a young kitten a couple weeks old, tiny (mabey 6 inches / 15cm long), it is completly white and has grey eyes, and looks pretty good after we gave it a thorough bath. If anyone wants it or if the shelter can take it in please let me know. We cant keep it ourselves and its got to go fast due to its incompatibility with our 2 other felines. THANKS! |

My digital camera died (drowned actually) so all ive got left is a crappy cellphone cam and no way to offload the pics onto a computer, so no pics. When we discovered it this morning it had crawled out of the box it came in and INTO my roomates scooter parked right beside. It was meowing steadily and continuously so this clued us in to its location, (as parked scooters generaly dont emit meowing sounds.) It was quite an adventure getting him out of there though, involving some disassembly, raising the scooter off the ground, and finally luring it out with tuna.
The cat is all white except for 2 small barely noticable dark spots behind each ear on top of its head which gives him a somewhat distinguished appearance. It is VERY small, too small to be away from his mother IMO. It is fond of milk, as kittens generally are, and to repay my hospitality it left a nice 'gift' for me on my couch this afternoon. |
