That is very true! There is no genetic testing done on puppy mill dogs or by backyard breeders! These dogs are highly susceptible to many ailments, for example hip displasya. An ethical breeder will have their animals tested and NEVER breed two animals that are both carriers of a defect! These puppies are much more expensive than the ones you would get at a pet store or from an ad in the newspaper. If you want a pure bred dog you should invest in on from an ethical breeder. Better yet, the mutt at your local shelter (or Peanut's Pet Shelter) will be about the best friend you will find!

Update time....
The little guy Patches who had to get a blood transfusion is home now and doing well, before he went to the vet he couldnt even stand up, now he is actually playing with some of the other pups tho the cost was quite high..$1650 for the op and all his meds (not that i am complaining ).
Four more little pups arrived yesterday, about six weeks old and very healthy (the lady that brought them had get thier first shots ) and one was rehomed within an hour of arriving .
I have been getting quotes on materials to complete the shelter and so far the cost of the galvanised sheets i want to use as dividers is coming in at $14000 peso i will work on getting that down.

Glad to hear patches is doing well. I guess material in Mexico is just as expensive as here in the states! Good luck with trying to get that price down, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Tasha took a trip into town today to see her favorite person, Dr Jen. We had a needle biopsy done on a growth on her neck. Good news, it's just a wart, although Tasha prefers to call it a beauty mark! She has gained yet another two pounds, and is the very picture of health We may have to cut back on her food soon, or she will be round! I did these before and after shots so all of you who loved and cared for her before she came home with us could really see the changes.

The shot on the left was taken right before we brought her back from Mexico. The shot on the right was taken about 10 minutes ago. Check out the tail. We can't even get a comb through that bush now!!! She is about 6 inches taller than she was in Feb.

The shot on the left is Tasha on her way home from the airport in Feb, and the one on the right was just taken. Big, big girl!

We have had a busy but productive week , we did adopt out a puppy but took in seven, one of which had to get a blood transfusion, another needed an operation for a blockage in its throatwhich the person who brought it apparently didnt notice , sadly it was such a little pup it didnt ,make it through the anesthesia . Another little pup came to us yesterday with such bad mange that she is nearly totally bald, but with meds and regular bathing she should be fine, Misha was in the same condition when she came to us and she is fine now.
I managed to buy enough shots for the 10 dogs that still need thier first vacs and some 2nd too at a slightly discounted price (still works out at $200 peso per shot but $100 peso cheaper as i am giving them myself)
So with the bllod transfusion it has been an expensive week !!!
Dog wash went well yesteday with all of our usual helpers and Leesa and the kids too. As usual the dogs had a great time and a couple of new visitors showd an interest in adopting , there was a lot of de'ticking as there seems to be a bit of an epidemic of ticks at the moment , but i now have the chemicals to spray both the shelter and my garden to hopefully rid the area of the nasty little critters
We also had a visit from a lovely mexican lady who had been (unsuccessfully) trying to set up a shelter and didnt know of our existance, she has pledged to give us some financial support in the way of food and meds (five bags of food and shampoo yesterday ) with a possible chance of some donated land from the Municipio at a later date (Pet Shelter 2 perhaps).
We also had a visit in the week form Steve and his lovely wife from NACER a US based animal charity that does a lot of work in this part of Mexico, organising clinics in some of the more out of the way areas and of course the bigger tows and cities like Tulum and Cancun.
They were impressed with what we have and have pledged financial support so we can do what is close to thier hearts , spaying and nuetering and even better they have a lot of clinical equipment with which we can turn the now unused origional shelter into a proper surgery so that visiting (and local) vets will be able to do small operations at the shelter, another small dream come true .
All we should need to find now is anesthesia (we have quite a lot of sutures thanks to our vet friends Brad and Katie Hulker from the US which should last us a while)
So a good week all round (except for the crappy roof which WILL be sorted )

Wow Andy.........sounds like an incredibly busy time. Lots of good news, and a bit of sad as well, but I guess unfortunately, that goes with the territory.

It sure is amazing how much good the shelter has done in the past year and how many lives have been touched by it......whether its attending the dog washes or even just sticking to this thread and reading all the heartwarming stories.

I truly hope that you and Jen know.....as well as all the peeps that have contributed in even the smallest of ways.......just how amazing you all are. These poor helpless creatures would never ever be lucky enough to know the love, comfort and security that they are given without you there for them! They would literally be street dogs.........foraging for food, hiding from the mean people (and there's plenty out there) and dodging the taxis that try to run them over. Not to mention, reproducing even more helpless pups. Even though at times it may seem things will never get better.....and that there are so many strays out there..........in my heart, I know you are making such a difference. So much love, dedication and selflessness...........

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

So sorry to hear about the puppy.

Glad to hear about the lady visiting and offering maybe a piece of land it would be fantastic to open up a second site. Wow, that is really fantastic news

Are you still planning on doing the online raffle for some of the donations that you weren't able to use for the July 4th raffle? I still have that necklace and bracelet set, so let me know. I will see what other item I can get donated.

As always, keep up the fantastic work. You and Jen are fantastic people, and I'm so glad that Jen's son is now there helping you out, as it is a HUGE tasks you two have taken on and you do need all the help you can get. And let us not forget the wonderful people on this forum that have given so much! They are just awesome!!
