The first time I quit a bunch of years ago, I gained 25 pounds and the problem is that I'm still hanging on to some of it and now have to work extra hard to get rid of it!
Keep up the fantastic job on the exercise; you should be VERY proud of yourself!

Oh was that first month hell but it became much easier as each day passed. Then one day, I picked it back up. UGH. Why would I do that? Nine months smoke free and I felt like I absolutely had to have one. One turned into smoking for another four months. I blamed it on so many stresses and various other reasons but the bottom line...I need to quit. This habit is disgusting and I really hate living my life around a habit. Smoke one on the way to work, one at 10am or so, one around 3:00ish, another one the way home from work and then 10+ before I go to bed. Gotta quit. So...I woke up this morning, hopped in the shower and told Dave, "this is it...I'm done smoking". Got out of the shower, stuck a left over patch from a year ago on my arm (God I hope it still works) and have gone through my day doing laundry, bleaching everything and tossing away all signs that I was ever a smoker. I do not think that this time will be so difficult. Let's think about this...most people (myself included as I am the BIGGEST procrastinator) will say, "I'll begin tomorrow (stop smoking, eating healthier, pay that bill, call that friend) but it hit me this morning that I just need and want to do this...TODAY. Eight hours later and still no smoking for me. I know it may sound cheesy or "it's only been 8 hours" but this is it...I feel good about this. What the hell...If can pack up my life in a few months from now to move to a different country where I know very little spanish, try to start a new business and make new friends, what makes me think that I cannot quit smoking??? This will be easy in comparison. Anyone else out there care to join me?
I know how hard it is. I did it cold turkey about 12 years ago, maybe more. I don't exactly remember. I tried several times, patch etc. It didn't work because I wasn't ready! The day I was ready, I just said " I don't smoke anymore". I really wanted to stop. I haven't had even a puff of a cigarette since that day. Other than months of eating sun flower seeds, and chewing on straws, it got easier and easier. I knew I couldn't even have one puff and I would start again, so I didn't. Best thing I ever did...Hang in there, if I can do , anyone can! Now, if I could just get Chas to stop!

Here's another reason to quit or to hang onto your ongoing quit.....

Today I went to the periodontist to have some tissue checked. The girl there who cleans my teeth every six months (and trades off with the regular dental hygenist who gets to clean them the other every six months which = teeth cleaned every three months), well, three months ago she found some "abnormal" tissue around an upper back tooth. Said we should "keep an eye on it". Since my dental cleaning was due this week and the "abnormal" tissue was still there (if not advanced), I took it upon myself to make an appointment with the periodontist for today.

She not only took tissue for the biopsy, she also removed enough gum tissue to alleviate my worry over the situation (I think the fact that I came to tears in the chair over it expressed my concern sufficiently - and yes, I felt foolish when it happened). She's pretty sure that the tissue is "nothing to worry about". But...

She's also pretty sure that it's caused by smoking.

I'll be setting a quit date in the near future. Maybe something like November 1st after this house thing is over and done. Yeah.... I know some of you would say "STOP NOW!!", but I know it wouldn't happen. Not with Playa next week and then the house closing/move on/around September 14th. But I will quit. And I will put on weight (like I did before).

But I've had enough of this shit. Enough of the cost. Enough of the worry about cancer.

And I'm blessed to have a guy who has told me numerous times that he'd MUCH rather have me chubby and healthy than slim and smoking.

There. I've said it. I've GOT to do it.

And right now the upper left quadrant of my mouth is aching like a sonofabitch. My own damn fault.

I just got a script filled for the Nicotrol Inhaler. Has anyone tried this? I've tried the gum, no go. Wellbutrin, allergic. Didn't try the patch, but I have super sensitive skin and heard that it itches.

Setting a date for a couple weeks from now, no more excuses! Smokers, I feel for everyone. It is such a tough habit to break and smoking since my teens, it feels like part of my personality. I'm hoping the inhaler will give me something to gesture with and hold on to after a few beers!

Good luck to everyone!

I've got mine sitting in a drawer from 2004 when I started smoking again. I was gonna quit right away and didn't.

I guess I should check the expiration date on it, huh.

Good luck melliedee!!! Just remember.... you're doing it for YOU, and YOU ARE WORTH IT.

That was one of the reasons why I quit--pre cancerous tissues on my cheeks. I was only 24! I've posted the story here before...but I am too lazy to look for it

Good luck Karen-you know if you need support, just PM me.

Wife of Dave is actually named Kami.
I am happy to report that I am on day #4 without any serious cravings...ok, I drank a glass of wine the other night and wanted to smoke but thought...nah...my hair would stink and I would hate myself afterwards. So, I finished off the glass and wine and went to bed.
Thanks for asking.

just think, tomorow you can say day 5When I quit, don't know why, but it made me feel really good to add another day and say it. Cravings will come and go. I've had a very stressful couple of months and one night I just wanted to sit on my patio have a glass of wine and a ciggie. I gave it some thought and quickly got over that craving. So I just had the wine
