Depending on where you live, the solution does not have to be a choice between meds or go it alone. That's a lousy choice to have to make, but on the Yucatan coast there may not be other options.

Some life coaches and professional organizers specialize in ADD clients. Many will work in conjunction with the clients therapist. In my opinion, those who are very well qualified either have counseling certifications or will only work in conjuction with a therapist. If you're considering hiring someone to assist you, take the hiring process seriously.

Let me make something very clear...I am not an advocate for hitting the pills right off the bat. Nothing I said in this discussion supports that conclusion. And being depicted as such causes me to bristle a bit.

Remember we are talking about adult ADD. Which is not a condition that suddenly appears out of the blue at 35 or so and captures one unaware. It is something that any adult who has ADD has actually been struggling with for most of their lives - albeit often undefined. But as you can see from the posts in this thread, there are many adults who recognize the symptoms in themselves and have just "dealt with it" with varying degrees of success throughout their lives. (And I suppose that perhps this is a distinguishing factor from mild depression...which can have adult-onset? No experience with this one).

And so, what I said to Susie in the post you quoted above was said from the viewpoint of an adult who has tried alternatives or other coping skills that may help - but there is still a struggle.
I was not trying to depict you in any way....I was just responding to how your words made me feel....Peace.

I had the understanding that ADD or ADHD can be clinically diagnosed...so for my part, if one feels they may have this condition, it seems to make sense to seek out professional help to make a diagnosis to confirm it one way or another.

Peace, Jacko! No worries. Did I mention that I'll be in Playa in a week? Life is good.

Yes, it certainly can, and should be. Also of note, it actually can be pointedly recognized through a scan of the brain, where you can see "significant and specific anatomical differences within areas of the brain thought to control attentional and inhibitory control systems, compared with brain scans of children without ADHD". Obviously cost is prohibitive to use this as a qualifying diagnoses identifier, though.

Gingele is right about it being a lifetime of coping mechanisms. The keys go on a hook by the door; my glasses go on a chain around my neck; the lemonade bottle gets refilled as soon as it's emptied; and all the other little rules for living that keep me from going crazy.

I think most people with this condition function as well as they have to but when "have to" is removed from the equation, they don't function so well at all. When I was working; when I went back to school to get my degree in my 30s; when I was scheduling out the lives of my two sons and getting them where they needed to be with what they needed to have with them and all the rest that had to do with proper parenting, I did fine MOST of the time (I occasionally screwed up royally). But I'm done with working and with child rearing and with college classes so most of the "have to" isn't there anymore. I'm not good at creating artificial deadlines for myself and, to me, that kind of defeats the purpose of the life I've chosen for myself down here - I'm not sure I'd be willing to do that at this stage of life. But I'd still like to remember where I left something and not leave projects half finished and remember to get the laundry off the line before it starts raining and reply to the email of friends before they get pissed at me!

As for depression... yes, I've been there, too. And I'm 99% certain this ain't that.

I think we all know people who bring about their own stress. I have a friend who can barely afford to take care of herself, yet, she lets
her deadbeat nephew move in..for 3 years now and he has not contibuted one red cent. always an excuse for not working..etc. She also likes to have dead beat boyfriends who end up dumping her and owing her lots of money. She doesn't "get it" that this obsession to take care of (enabling) others is adding all the stress to her life. I see it all the time with people. Dump the baggage when you can...and life will be so much better.
Ever known an enabler that was calm and happy?
Also..alot of stress is financial...learn to live within your means, do without all the frivolous things, save money for a rainy day. That way you will feel more secure, and have extra money to get out of town as much as you like or need.
