FAIR ENOUGH! You make an excellent point in terms of the quantity, even if I think I make an excellent point in terms of the quality (which is really to say the repetition of content, in this case, and not to cast aspersions on the discussion in any other sense). So far I think the only thing new is this Marburger report and the weird kind of leverage that applies to the rather embattled PDS, to the extent that it echoes the IPCC report and of course Mr M's connection to the Bush administration and all.

Anyway, good answer.

Steve assumes that this thread is on the same topic as his. If he refers back to the original post, he will find that its not even close.

Precisely, this thread is actually about Bush's malfeasance, the need for socialized medicine, the war in Iraq, inequities in the distribution of wealth, along with global climatic change and cognitive dissonance. Isn't it?

Ahh, but I left out the key uniting factor in all those topics. None of these things would be a problem at all if Ms. Lewinsky had not met President Clinton.

The IPCC report stated that it was with 90% certainty that global warming was manmade. That statement, on its face, is ridiculous. We all know that climate change is a naturally occurring event. No dispute there, I hope. So, how can it be that this time (and this time, only), it is 100% manmade. I can see man adding to the problem, but to claim that it is totally manmade flies in the face of basic science.
Well, you do, apparently. Depsite trying to be a bit slippery about this, Senator Kerry, what you are essentially saying is that Dr. John Marburger, head science adviser to the white house, Phd from Stanford, has manipulated the data to come to the same conclusions as the IPCC. He does this in order to fit the science into his "pre-existing worldview" about global warming. Yes?

You funny!

Dude, it's so much alike that on multiple points, I could literally copy and paste my responses from that thread to post here! It's more alike than two things that you could think of that... would be... quite... alike.

Perhaps you need to see a good eye doctor or something. Even Scott, you'll note, didn't argue the similarity tack, just responded re you getting your fair share in terms of the quantity/length.

I'd just like to call attention to Melliedee's continued restraint, here. Admirable! But you can see the strain... weird leverage, I say!

Whether you think global warming is a hoax or not, things like this kind of take the wind out of the sails of utopian notions against government regulation to help protect the environment and for the market and big business to somehow do it out of the goodness of their hearts...

Quote:
$4.6 billion settlement in power plant air pollution case

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In the largest environmental settlement in Justice Department history, American Electric Power has agreed to install $4.6 billion in equipment to sharply reduce emissions at coal-fired power plants in five states, sources said . . .

Justice prosecutors brought the case on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, a dozen environmental groups and the plaintiff states of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts . . .

Environmental scientists have linked emissions from coal-fired power plants to forest degradation, waterway damage and reservoir contamination.

Medical authorities report detrimental health effects on asthma sufferers, the elderly and children.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, AEP provides electric power to five million customers in 11 states, according to its Web site. The company is ranked 192 on the "Fortune 500" list of corporations, on annual revenues of $12.6 billion.
Prolly they just didn't have the funds to follow the law and figured, eh, what the heck -- it's only children, the elderly, asthma sufferers, and the forests and waterways of a dozen or so states, let's just go ahead and "illegally release massive amounts of air pollutants for years."

Yeah, big business is on our side when it comes to the environment! You betcha!

Another good one: anyone who would like a quick summary of all the global warming threads here at Playa.Info can just read through this one-page Fox "News" bit from just yesterday.

It's also a grand critique of their approach in general, I think. Consider:
the fake, weak set-up by Hannity's lapdog, the supposed liberal Colmes, who as usual rolls over and plays dead at the second kick;

your cowboy in the white hat, Hannity, riding in to bring some reason to the whole thing with his usual scoffing and belittling of one side and brown-nosing of the other (guess which side gets which treatment, if you can!);

the supposed expert who's so out of the loop on the topic but whipped up by the whole atmosphere that he says there's no scientific evidence at all for claims of human-caused global warming;

and rounding out Colmes as the token liberal, perhaps in an attempt to give some sort of numeric weight (as if that's all that counted) to the "fair and balanced" moniker, we have everyone's favorite liberal to make fun of, a tree-hugger (actually from Greenpeace!), who of course is barely allowed to speak and certainly lofted no softballs like Hannity tosses up for his "expert" (though to Mr Tree-Hugger's credit, he uses his rare chance to highlight the irrelevance of much of the commentary and especially Hannity's shift-and-dodge tactics)...
I mean, if you sat down with a team of excellent writers, comedians and actors and worked for a couple of weeks, you probably still couldn't come up with a better parody of Fox than this. How you fans can continue to see the word news as applicable to what's presented by this outfit is a bit more than a bit beyond me. Granted, CNN's Crossfire was of the same ilk, but at least that network had the dignity and self-respect to cancel the stupid thing after that fact was finally and beautifully made clear to them in Stewart's memorable appearance.

Anyway, as I say, you can get a quick nutshell summary of all the environmental debates here on just that one page, if you're interested. No matter which side you're on or what you think on this topic, take a read and see if you don't find yourself nodding in recognition at just about everything!

Steve

Below is a list of the citizen plaintiffs as described in the DOJ statement here who joined the US Department of Justice in this action. I only wish we would have acted sooner to prevent more of this pollution earlier. Even a $4.6B judgement is just a drop in the bucket compared to the onslaught of unnecessary pollution and destruction caused by big corporations seeking to maximize their profits. I believe we must do much more, more quickly in order to better preserve our environment for the benefit and enjoyment of our children.

I recommend each of us consider supporting environmental groups who work so diligently to act on our behalf in cases like this where each of us are too small to accomplish much on our own..but combined in the strength of a group acting together, we can take on even the largest corporations who are recklessly spewing dangerous chemicals into our air and our water and force them to stop. These companies can do better with just a little less profit...we must insist they do.

IMO, this would be the very finest example of citizen patriotism..working together to protect and preserve our country's beautiful and important natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of our children.

Other Plaintiffs
The following eight states joined as plaintiffs in the case: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maryland, and Rhode Island.

The following citizen groups also joined as plaintiffs: Natural Resources Defense Council, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club,United States Public Interest Research Group, Izaak Walton League of America, Ohio Citizen Action, Citizens Action Coalition of Indiana, Hoosier Environmental Council, Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, West Virginia Environmental Council, Clean Air Council, Indiana Wildlife Federation, and the League of Ohio Sportsmen.

The Dutch entrant was about 45 minutes ahead of its nearest opponent at last report.
The leading teams will rest overnight, then parade into Adelaide in the morning to cross a ceremonial finish line in Victoria Square in the city.
Nuna 4 driver, Oliver van der Meer, has expressed elation on reaching the finish line.
"It feels fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. I mean we work so hard for this. A complete year off, everything that we... our heart, blood, sweat and tears are in that car," he said.
"And it's so fantastic to see it cross the finish line first."
There was drama earlier when the American Stanford University team's solar car blew a tyre and overturned near Marla.
The driver was unhurt.
