In the Rush to Help - Global Warming

We may actually do more harm. Interesting read.

Walking to the shops ‘damages planet more than going by car’ - Times Online

Quote:
Walking does more than driving to cause global warming, a leading environmentalist has calculated.
Food production is now so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted providing a person with enough calories to walk to the shops than a car would emit over the same distance. The climate could benefit if people avoided exercise, ate less and became couch potatoes. Provided, of course, they remembered to switch off the TV rather than leaving it on standby

That's the "American way" of spelling it.

Oops. Can I say I was trying to save the energy that it would have taken me to correct it?

I don't know, but some of the findings at the bottom of the article come from a variety of sources. I think this guy just collects these facts as a hobby. He is a carbonista.

This sounds like it would be an article from The Onion.

So...its hopeless I suppose...the only way we might begin to deal with this problem is by stopping walking and eating....and by driving more instead...yeah..thats it!

It sounds an awful lot like the "don't buy CFL's scare argument" because they have mercury in them......Its all too much to deal with really......lets just all agree there really isn't a problem at all!

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. The guy who is the author of How to Live a Low-Carbon Life. Obviously, he is on the side of those that are concerned.

It does bolster my contention that some things that we do, with the best of intentions, actually do more harm than good.

There goes Jacko, again. Misrepresenting people. Who ever said don't buy CFLs? The point, then, was that one should make damned sure they know how to handle one if it breaks, rather than sweeping it up and throwing it into the recycled glass bin.

well, I certainly agree with that last bit.
His reasoning is likely very correct...the problem is, people would actually have to eat less and avoid burning calories for it to work....and based on how people in North America already eat WAY more calories than they need to survive...it just ain't gonna happen.

It is true that some things that we do, with the best of intentions, actually do more harm than good. It is not true that this article does much to bolster that contention IMO.

IMO, This article is full of facts with very little knowledge or wisdom added.

What does Fox have to do with it? The article I originally posted was from a local newspaper, reporting on the story of a woman who had to pay $2000 to get her house cleaned of mercury.
