Trip Report. Me & Ma do Playa / wimmin's week
Disclaimer: This report will be relatively brief (relatively = see my January report for comparison!). The reason for this brevity is threefold. First, it was a short trip. Second, due to the nature of the trip, selective editing has been employed to protect us wimmins. Third, there are a few *ahem* fuzzy parts. Day 1 – After 2 months of countdowns, postings and PMs our day has arrived. My mother in law, “Ma”, and I were off to Playa. Ma spent the night at our house to be up and out early for our 6am pickup. The car arrives and we are off. Check in at O’Hare is a snap. One ativan for me, one bloody mary each and a short nap later and we are arriving in CUN. We had arranged to meet Kris a/k/a “Kricket” outside the terminal to share our ride to La Tortuga. We had never met other than via PMs but we were excited to see her smiling face (after dos cervezas each at the beer cart outside of the terminal). We hopped in the van and after the obligatory stop at 7-11 we were off down 307. There was some traffic, but thanks to a couple of six packs and lots of talk we had a great trip down with our patient playa.info driver – Jesus, aka "Table," aka "Trinidad." He was a tolerant fellow. Our Driver: Kris and I on the road: Ma and Kris: Arrived at La Tortuga and could not wait to get to see our swim up room! Ma and I were sharing the king sized bed for one night until we were to be moved to a standard room with separate beds. Check in went smoothly (I think) and soon enough we were changing into our suits to swim in the beautiful oasis at La Tortuga. Ma at the swim up room Me in the pool right outside the room: Ma getting in the pool from our room: Meanwhile, Kris had also changed and met us down in our room for some champagne.

Day 1, part 2
After we polished off the champagne (fast) and hit the bar for a few more we finally left for the beach. One of my soon-to-be-favorite bartenders at Tortuga: Kris and I at the bar: Ma hitting the Jack: Kris, Ma and I on the way to the beach: I know, this was a long detour between touchdown and beach but let me tell you, it was a blast. As an aside here, Ma does not remember going to the beach on Day 1. Frankly, I was a little fuzzy myself. On Day 3 or 4 I asked her “Ma, did we go to the beach that first day?” She answered, “No honey, we just stayed at the pool at the hotel”. “No, Ma, I am pretty sure we went to the beach and Kris and I got you in the ocean for your very first time” “No, honey, we just stayed at the pool”. “You sure Ma?” “Yes, I’m sure honey”. Well, here are the photos to prove it – we did, in fact, go to the beach. No pics of the actual baptism, but I know Kris and I got Ma into the ocean. Plus she called her son – my husband – shortly thereafter to tell him that she had actually been in the ocean. For the first time in her life. And she doesn’t remember. Ma at Playa Maya Me and ? (fill in the blank) at the beach: Kris at the beach: After the beach we went back to shower and change for dinner. Unfortunately Kris didn’t make it past that point. Maybe it was fortunate for her, but not for us since we were having such a blast with her. Oh well – it was the two wimmin loose on the streets of Playa. But before we leave!!! Decisions, decisions: Me and ma, ready to head out We stumbled out for dinner and decided to find a seat – and fast. We plopped our butts down at the Glass Bar since we thought that after the bloody marys, beer, champagne and tequila that we had already had today that a nice glass of wine was in order. Or five. The food was very good – but very small – at the Glass Bar. But the wine was tasty so we had more and finally decided to stumble off for some excitement. Seeing that this was Ma’s first time in Playa I decided to head down towards the *BANNED* and buy ourselves a nice ringside seat for some dancing and the fire dancer show. Once we had purchased the best table they could carry out for us we proceeded to scamper up onto the dance floor and cut a rug. Unfortunately, at 5 feet nothing, Ma kept banging her shins on to the concrete dance platform every time I dragged her ass up for another jig. I did not realize this at the time, but I suppose those yelps of pain should have been a clue. The fire show was a blur, as the pictures depict. The way home was – well, how shall I put this delicately – an adventure. You know how the song says “Tequila makes her clothes fall off’? Well, that wasn’t the case here (in fact, Ma slept with her clothes on). No, in Ma’s case, tequila made her legs stop working. Let’s just say she was having a hard time staying vertical on the short walk back to Tortuga. She kept slurring something about not being able to use her knees. Fortunately, I was able to recruit a young amigo to “assist” us in getting Ma back to the hotel. This kind young gentleman gently guided Ma back home while I pinballed along side of her - all the while making fun of the fact that my mother in law couldn’t hold her tequila. “Ma, what would your sons think…if they knew you had no tolerance? For chisssakes we’ve only been drinking for 12 hours!!” Fortunately she remembers none of that. So mi amigo helped Ma back to the hotel and somehow I got her back to the room where I dropped her on the bed. Then I kissed her on the forehead, grabbed the key and headed out to La Ranita. Called Sr. Yason on the short walk there to tell him of our exploits. And to tell on Ma. Met a beautiful bartender and some other friendly folks at La Ranita. Had a few more beers and some Centenario. Not sure what time I rolled in, but all in all, a fine first day in Playa. Last edited by gingele; 10-31-2007 at 11:03 AM.. |
