Good News Central Texas

New terminal approved for low-cost airlines
City of Austin has approved the lease between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and General Electric Commercial Aviation Services LLC for the construction, operation and maintenance of a low-cost airport terminal.
The 30-year lease is for 40 acres at the south end of the airport at a rate of 22 cents per square foot plus a percentage of net revenue.
The new terminal will serve "ultra-low-cost" airlines including a new Mexican airline vivaAeroBus, which has agreed to fly between Austin and five Mexican destinations. The airlines fares range as low as $5 to $30. The airline is aiming to operate flights by Thanksgiving.

Hmmm - that could be good news . . . but then I start thinking "ultra-low cost Mexican airline", and I get nervous

I find these air fares not believable.

Where did you get this information? I would be ecstatic to have low cost flights to Mexico from Austin, but $5 to $30? That's kind of ridiculous!

never mind, I followed the links.

It was on the city councel agenda yesterday and was approved. It was in the Statesman this morning and I did a Google News search for City of Austin and found it.

mabber,
$5-30 is the low end. I'm sure actual costs will be much higher. When this was discussed in the local political forum the "experts" were saying that typical costs on similar airlines were $100 or less each way. Still a bargain if you make it there.

Sounds GREAT to me! By Thanksgiving, is that too good to be true?

Yeah, $200 roundtrip would still be a good deal.

Might be worth us driving about 5 hours from Midland to Austin for a deal like that. Going out of Midland can be a pain.

EasyJet in the UK offers very low fares. Some as low as £1 return!

But there can be a catch - you may have to travel at odd times/days, book weeks in advance, and the low prices are often singles with only normal price return tickets available.
