Warner retiring from US Senate
Sen. John Warner, R-Virginia, said Friday he won't run for re-election.
Sen. John Warner, R-Virginia, was first elected to his seat in 1978. "I say that my work and service to Virginia as a senator will conclude upon the 6th of January, 2009, when I finish ... my career of a then 30 years in the United States Senate," said Warner, 80. Warner announced his retirement during a news conference at the University of Virginia, his alma mater. Warner's retirement puts Senate Republicans in a bigger bind as they try to recapture the chamber from the Democrats in next year's election. Virginia was once a solid red state, but Democrats have won most of the major state wide elections in recent years. A former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and former U.S. Navy secretary, he is one of the most respected voices in the Senate on military and national security issues. Warner served in the Navy during World War II, enlisting at the age of 17, according to his Web site. He also was in the Korean War as a U.S. Marine. He worked in the Department of the Navy for five years during the Vietnam War and was secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974. |

Look for Mark Warner, former VA governor and potential presidential candidate, to jump right in to run for that seat. Look for him to win.
I said this morning to my husband that the W administration is reminding me more and more of "The Great Gatsby", whatever the line was about careless people leaving human wreckage in their wake. I am thankful that Warner, Lugar, and the like have been there. They must be so fatigued of the whole scene. I think one of the bigger stories to come out post-W will be the extent to which the moderate Republicans increasingly were joined by their more strident colleagues to impede what were perceived to be devastatingly misguided W policies. There's a hint of it in this month's Atlantic Monthly, but I'm sure more will out. Last edited by MWC; 08-31-2007 at 07:33 PM. |

Being a Virginian and a Republican, all I can say is "Thank God." Warner is part of the old school Senate who just wants to go along to get along. Back when he was married to Elizabeth Taylor, many Democrats portrayed him as a dolt. When he started to go against Bush, those same Democrats pointed to him as the voice of reason. Truth is, they had it right the first time.

I know very little about Virginia politics outside the Allen gaffe and loss this past campaign.
I do know that higher education people were pretty happy with Warner, the recent gov. Sounded a little like a pragmatist who held education in high regard. Those are two of the most important qualities in a candidate, IMO. |

Seems to have been generally a sharp, serious and dedicated professional public servant to me, at least in recent history...he will be missed in the service of our country....of course the neocons see him as a dolt..they are cynical at their peril....

He also noted the Congressmen who had been elected the Senate and brought over with them the less civil and deliberative approach of the house. He did not seem to think very highly of that. |

I don't know. People can be pretty freaky in the bedroom but still have some very good qualities. Now i know this wasn't in the bedroom, but I have met some decent guys in the men's room: no reach around or glory holes or anything,,,,,I personally just look straight ahead and take care of business. But if he was a good Senator before this,,,then he is a good Senator. I remember when Barney Frank first came out of the closet. So don't measure his life and worth by this,,,,,look at it all. And consider how it would be if your darkest secret went public.
