Another Unpredictable Pitbull

This dog was so unpredictable...(Sorry,digital pictures of 35mm photos, so quality sucks)

It was horrific when he would lay for hours on end...letting our toddlers use him as a jungle gym.

He would attack ferouciously with love if anyone came near his food bowl too.

You never knew when he was going to lick your face until you stopped him from continuing.

Cats were deathly afraid of him... He mauled them too... with affection.

The worst pain he inflicted on any human was if you stood in the way of his wagging tail...it felt like a whip.

We rescued this dog from the street. We were in St. Louis, MO at a hotel and he was there in the parking lot sniffing at garbage cans. He was emaciated and hungry...but he was friendly to us and we wanted to feed him. We went to dinner at a resturant and fixed a big doggy bag for him. When we returned he was gone.
The next morning when we were loading uo the car he returned and we gave him our doggy bag. My wife wanted to take him home but I objected, but hen I opened the door of our mini-van he jumped in and sat in one of the seats looking at us. I knew then he was meant to be ours.

We loved this dog for eight years and he guarded and loved my family as a loyal and trusting friend.

The Media is responsible for creating the image of the "Pit bull" they love to report stories of dog attacks. Its the same thimg as calling a semi-automatic rifle an "Assault rifle" which gets more of an emotional response? You can bet it wont reach a large circulation of readers/viewers unless it can be described as a Pit Bull. The link at the bottom of the page has some good information on the history of the lineage of the breeds of dogs that the modern "Pit Bull" has evolved from. It also discusses the "Bull baiting"(fighting Bulls) that these dogs did in the past.

Saying these dogs are inherently vicious and unprdictable is ludicrous. Our Pitbull "Louie" was about 1 -2 years old when we found him, we assume he was mistreated with firearms as he was terrified of guns, loud noises, and thunder. We have no idea the amount of cruelty he may have been subjected to. But even with the "Unkowns" of his past...he was predictable when it came to his family that took him in.

We lost "Louie" to a Stroke last year we all miss him very much...he was a great dog and his breed I fear is doomed to fall further into the Paranoid and Ignorance of the un-educated public.

Of course any death of a child is horrible no matter what the cause. But I think in most...if not all cases of death or mauling by a dog...it is the result of the humans that the dog was handeled and raised by that caused the animal to lash out in such a way. But I also believe that their are dogs that are born...like humans...that can be "mentally off" I do not rule out that there may have been numerous attacks in the past that were carried out by dogs like this. I think there should be some type of non-breed specific study of dogs that do attack humans to see if they share some type of brain abnormality. Perhaps that could shed some light on the phenomena?

I think the "PitBull" breeds Demonization needs a break and people should think about what this breed of dog has went through at the hands of monsters who are the true demons. Thanks to Mike Vick a ray of light shone to their behalf. To see more of what these lovely dogs have been put through visit the link below:

I love pits. They are such great dogs. the problem is so many people use them for fighting and the reports are always going to be on the ones that attack not on the thousands that are loving , gentle and protective of their families. It is such a shame. I am very sorry for your loss. But you do have some wonderful memories that will be with you forever!

My misunderstood dog...She was raised around kids and all she would do is lick them to death......But when people see her and notice her face and her tail they will go to the sidewalk across the street......Chow's too get a bad rap.......

Mikey, your baby is so beautiful!! Akitas get a bad rap as well. Last weekend, while we were camping, we met a couple with a rescued Akita. That kid could have just loved us to death. He was gorgeous and so friendly.

About a month ago, when we were camping (we camped a lot this summer), there was a guy who was training his Akita to be unsocial. He had her tied, away from their campsite. He told us tha he was doing this on purpose. UGH. She is such a lovely dog, pure white with a black mask. She is only eight months old and so loveable to us and our dogs. He was planning on breeding her. I just cringe when I see people like this have great dogs and make plans to turn them into puppy factories. Also, to teach them to be mean. If I would have been camping alone, I probably would have stole her.

hows this for stupid...

I had two Akitas and one Pit Bull living together as inside dogs. Only one of the Akitas were neutered too. We did have some hellacious fights between the boys. All I can say is the Akitas were lucky they were double coated dogs. But most of the time they played, ate and slepy together as a family.

The Sad thing is...I lost all three last/this year. One Akita to cancer in summer 06', then Louie to Stroke in fall 06', and our other Akita to Kidney failure in winter 07'. But all were 10 years or older and had good long lives for their breed. Just sucked losing them so close together and I put two of them down myself(think Old Yeller) which is very tough, but I feel it is my responsibility. I am sure many think it strange, but I feel it should be me...not a vet that helps to ease the suffering.

I finally found the peace to get a new friend 3 weeks ago. We got a Great Pyrenese his name is Seamus(shay-muss)(Irish for James), but we call him Jimmy Boy. Here is a pic for those who didnt see it in another thread.

he is eight weeks old in this pic(taken a week or so ago) and weighs 27 pounds and is bigger than our 11 year old min-pin.

I've never, as an adult, had any pets other than cats...and lost mine last month...but you guys are all making me want a dog. Not gonna happen (apt living and 2 jobs leaves no time for a new pet) so I'll just keep coming over to your houses and sweet talkin' your animals.
I give great doggie massages...just ask Doggiemom's pups

Beautiful babies...all of 'em
