This guy has the money and capability to disapearif he wants to. He could have altered his plane to fly a longer distance, land on a unknown airstrip in a remote location, and be living some sort of different life somewhere else. I would like to think that he took a bunch of money and flew to a very third world country and is living on a desolate beach with 6 topless polynesian girls. Or he flew into a mounatin that nocked out the locator device.
Hmm..interesting speculation.... Only 6 topless Polynesian girls????

part of what you say could make sense. we do have some fairly tall mountains around here (10,000') but they are not "rugged". I would think it would be fairly easy to spot a crash from the air in this part of the country unless he drifted farther west and or southwest where the mountains do get a bit more rugged and difficult to spot from above.

i've done alot of hunting in the area he's missing in and have been out for days without seeing another person. he could easily "disappear" if he wanted to.

I know, sorry about that! I've been a pilot for 15 years and I've kind of gotten a little jaded I guess. I REALLY need to get to PDC!! A few drinks, a few sunbathers and I'll be right as rain.

How's this instead? "Say, what's that mountain goat doing way up here in the clouds?" Think about it.

Just so the non-pilots out there know, flight plans are not required. When I travel cross country I rarely file a flight plan. Instead I call the nearest approach (air traffic control) and ask for "flight following." This is basically a request for the controllers to follow you on radar for the duration of your flight. But then if you're flying low in Nevada, you can't really get flight following. Altitude is life when it comes to airplanes.

They said he had four tanks of fuel so maybe he did just take off. I still believe he crashed somewhere. Airplane mistakes can be very unforgiving.
Remember with airplanes taking off is optional, landing is manditory.

Wreakage found

Fossett search expands to 10,000 square miles - CNN.com

"Wreckage found was NOT that of S. Fossett's plane but rather that of an older missing crash"

....so who's wreck was it? Amilia Earhart?

I wish newsies could get their facts straight...Civil Air Patrol does not own any C-130's. It was most likely a Coast Guard or National Guard C-130 participating in the search. Trivial maybe...but if they can't pay attention to details, what else in their story is wrong?

When it comes to covering aviation, many reporters are misinformed to put it nicely.

Okay, so homeboy has been missing for over a week. Our little town of Minden has been turned upside down with all of these reporters, news vans, and people ruining our hangout (The Taildragger Bar and Grill- Right on the airport where the search is based). My dad is part of one of the search and rescue crews that went out looking for him and he rolled his ATV in some nasty stuff by Walker Lake. He's okay, but it just kinda makes you a little frustrated when millions of dollars are spent searching for a millionaire when there is a major wildland fire nearby that is only 18 percent contained, war in Iraq, and other big news, but Rich lost dude is the top news story. Don't see the point really? AAHHHHHHHHHH! I want my bar back.

Its the Nevada Air Guard's C-130 "Spirit of Hawthorne." Plus the CAP has a bunch of little planes looking.

And the new total of missing crash sites found as of today SEVEN!!! Some of them are 50+ years old...Long live Nevada's nothingness!
