Steven Fossett Missing

Just heard he is missing since taking off from a Reno, NV airport, looking for a place to try and set a land speed record. The guy took a lot of chances and had several close calls. If anyone counld suvive a crash it would probably be him.

here's the news report. that's just over the hill from here about 30 miles to the east. there's lots of nothing out there.

Your right about the "whole lot of nothing" comment. I have flown over the area and it is a lot of ground to cover seeing as he did not file a flight plan.

I hope he turns up OK. He's a sharp guy, as well as a pioneer. Positive thoughts his way.....

The news said his plane carried an emergency beacon that would go off if the plane crashed. He could also set it off manually. They think he may have emergency landed.

Perhaps he is just trying to avoid taxes.

We hope he is ok. .....but I fear for the worst. It is always the smallest of things that kills the greatest of people.

I heard on the news that he did not file a flight plan.. if that it is true then that was stupid...but then I only believe half of what I hear on the news.

If you hit a mountain hard enough, the ELT (emergency beacon) will not go off.

Was my question to day at work. If the crash did not st it off and he was not incapacitated, why did he not turn it on manually? Second, why not use the radio? Which leads us to (I hope I'm wrong) he may not be able to!

I agree. I filed a flight plan anytime I went to fly. If I was only doing local pattern work at nearby airfields, then I made sure the FBO kept a copy on file. Somebody always new what direction I was headed and for how long.
Unfortunately, it's very commonplace for VFR pilots to not file flight plans. Guys like him with all the experience he had sometimes get more complacent.

You know the saying: There are old pilots and bold pilots...but no old, bold pilots!

It's easy to Monday morning quarterback this thing, just like most airplane incidents/accidents. I just hope he's OK.

No...only if you are filing an Instrument Flight. Visual flights (VFR) do not require them.

they've set up the mission base at the airport in my town about 5 miles from my house. that's where one of my favorite bars is. maybe you'll see me on t.v.

they've expanded the search area to 600 square miles. there is the sierra nevada's, the pine nuts, the sawtooths, and a few other mountain ranges along with alot of desert.

As much as I'd love Steve to be found safe and well, and especially how Sir Richard Branson says he's such a ' tough old boot' you can't but help feel its not gonna be a happy ending to this story...

Ah yes, the synical side of me has to chime in. Maybe he doesn't want to be found! Dead or alive. He is smart enough and experienced enough to make sure all the proper safety precautions were in place. But they were not apparently. Maybe he planned this. This guy has the money and capability to disapearif he wants to. He could have altered his plane to fly a longer distance, land on a unknown airstrip in a remote location, and be living some sort of different life somewhere else. I would like to think that he took a bunch of money and flew to a very third world country and is living on a desolate beach with 6 topless polynesian girls. Or he flew into a mounatin that nocked out the locator device.
