viva maya
We've booked 2 weeks at the Viva Maya for Feb. because of a deal we couldn't refuse. Anyone know if the holidayers are mostly European? We went a few years ago for 3 days in November, slept at the Azteca but played all day at the Maya. (we felt it was much too quiet at the Azteca) Problem was, it was hard to play with others when they didn't much speak English and really kept to themselves. We thought maybe it was just the time of a year. Are we wrong in thinking that?

I have been to the Viva Maya nine or ten times. I don't choose it because it is cheaper (And I havn't found it to be all that much cheaper than the five stars.) I like the smaller resort because it seems like you get to know more of the guests and the staff. I vacation more for the people I meet and the good times I enjoy, not necessarily the pampering.
I find the food to be as good as the other resorts, including the Iberostars, except for the nights that the upscale resorts offer special lobster or steak dinners. I don't like the fact that they have opened an adult only pool near the entrance to the resort. Now (or at least when I was last there) the main pool bar does not seem like the center of activity anymore. I have come to know many of the staff there and its become like visiting old friends. If it was my choice, I would go to the viva maya this next trip, but I am part of a wedding party, and the bride and groom chose IB Tucan. |

I am with you on your comparison of the Azteca.....yawn. As far as nationalities of guests, it is hit or miss. I have gone times when the place is mostly Europeans, and other times mostly North Americans. Once we befriended an extended German family and only one or two could speak English, but we still had a great time with them. We became the token Americans of the group. I know its uncomfortable for some people, but reaching out beyond your comfort zone to meet new people leads to an amazing experience.

Slayer...
So good to hear the good review. We are not looking for 5 star by any means. Just was a place to soak up the sun, have a few drinks and spend time with our kids. Also looking very forward to meeting new people. We are not picky people so I am sure the food will not be an issue... Not that I am counting but 106 days to go to paradise |

At times one wants to see a bit more lively stuff going on Looks like we will have best of both by being able to use Azteca's sister Resort the Viva Maya and ...we will... ![]() We too enjoy meeting new people..some of our best friends we met at Resorts.. Slayer we also do not choose a Resort only because of price..Although I did get a very good deal on the Azteca that was not the deciding factor in choosing the place.. |
