Ahmadinejad Visits NY on Sunday
How does anyone here feel about his upcoming trip to NYC this Sunday to address the UN. Also, he wanted to lay a wreath at Ground Zero (which now has been denied) but will speak at Columbia University. I say he should stay home..

Personally I can understand why folks might not want him to visit ground zero.
Thinking geo-politically one has to remember that millions marched in Tehran against terrorism spontaneously following 9-11. Frankly, in the current world situation I think we should do everything in our power to exploit the riff between the Shia Iranian regime and the growth in Sunni Extremists (al-Qaeda). Allowing him to visit ground zero might be in our best interest under this scenario. Symbolism is perhaps even more important in the Muslim world than it is in the US. Difficult decision. |

Well I guess he still plans on going to Ground Zero on Monday at 10am. I do have to say that Hillary finally said something I like:
Senator Hillary Clinton released the following statement: "It is unacceptable for Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who refuses to renounce and end his own country's support of terrorism, to visit the site of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil in our nation's history." |

Sorry, I just don't get why we would deny him showing sympathy and respect for those who died. And denying him makes us look like the bad guy to the world. Probably this scenario has gone just the way he hoped. He says he wants to go, we say no you're a bad guy (we look like fascists), he goes anyway and lays wreath- world admires him for defying us and showing his respects to the victims. Don't see how it could have worked better for him publicity wise. We're so dumb in our actions sometimes.

Leaders of countries that actively support the killing of our troops and citizens should not be let anywhere near the site. I am sure the world will understand. If they don't, screw 'em. It's not their decision to make. We have to let the man visit the UN. Anything beyond that should be taken off the table.

I dont really care for the guy and what he stands for - but there is always room to show respect and maybe very small chance for healing.
It would take a lot of guts for him to do this knowing how Americans feel about it. (think of the protests that would take place) I dont know how the familys of the victims would feel about this and that is really who should have the final say-so. But is it too soon after 9/11 for this to happen ??? I dont know ? (I am thinking of Pearl Harbor and other places were a one time enemy has come back to show their resepct by laying a wreath or something of that nature ) |
