USA Youth Leaning to the Left

Full NY Times Article here

There are also links to how the poll was conducted and a pdf of all the results

Young Americans Are Leaning Left, New Poll Finds

By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MEGAN THEE
Published: June 27, 2007

The poll offers a snapshot of a group whose energy and idealism have always been as alluring to politicians as its scattered focus and shifting interests have been frustrating. It found that substantially more Americans ages 17 to 29 than four years ago are paying attention to the presidential race. But they appeared to be really familiar with only two of the candidates, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, both Democrats.

They have continued a long-term drift away from the Republican Party. And although they are just as worried as the general population about the outlook for the country and think their generation is likely to be worse off than that of their parents, they retain a belief that their votes can make a difference, the poll found.

Roni,
I fall into that demographic, and yes, I do tend to lean to the left. But I'm not a big fan of either of the highlighted canidates.
Gotta say I'm rootin for Bill Richardson! Yeah, yeah, nobody really knows his name, but IMO, he's got the most relevent experience for the job.
Just thought I'd add my 2cents.

Wow, US politics on a vacation web site. Now the politicians have gone too far. To set the record straight, I am a bit older than those young whipper snappers in teh poll and I even caucus with the right, but when they start leaning right, I exit stage left. What I can not figure out for the life of me is why does any of this right and left crap matter? I do not care if a candidate is red or blue or green, or yellow if I think they are the best candidate for the job, they get my vote. Of the mass of middle Americans that I mix with, we all are middle and all vote for the best candidate. I even know republicans that preach red as the day is long, but privately admit that they have and will continue to vote for a blue if it is the better person for the job.
So, in closing why the politics on this great web site? Lets forget the left and right and have a shot or two of tequila right down the middle!!!!!!

Really? They needed a poll to see that the youth of this country leans left? Seriously, when has this ever not been the case. The youth suck off their parents till they're bled dry and then its on to government handouts. Me me me. Mine mine mine. Just more entitlement. Gimme gimme gimme.

Parents love and nurture their children, helping them to get a start in life.

The overwhelming majority of those children then work and pay taxes for the rest of their lives.

Some of us are still center-left well into our 50's and beyond.

Do you have kids? How many? What are their ages?

Did you suck off your parents until they were bled dry?

I've been watching Bill Richardson for a long time. I hope he has a prominent role in the administration of whoever gets elected, Democrat or Republican.

In my opinion politics is far too important not to talk about. It is when people are not paying attention that scoundrels in power do their worst. It is after all a representative democracy, or so they say, in which all citizens should take part.
