Well actually, I was working so did have something better to do. Just trying to keep my "Most Helpful Peep" moniker for 2007.

We were told that the second one was a tlacoache. That's what we call the ones who wander around the neighborhood at night!

One of the first parties I attended after moving down here was at Heather's (Asian food night, I think). She had a coatamundi that used to visit regularly and prop itself up the tree by her back yard. When I lived in Nicte-Ha every night we had a few of the brave little blighters running through our garden and puzzling our Londonborn and bred moggies no end.
On the other hand, they may have been tlacoaches...

From my Google research, I think the original pic was a coatimundi....tlacuaches look more like an opossum (actually, I think they ARE Mexican opossums) and have a different tail like this...

As opposed to the ring-tailed coatimundi which is a member of the raccoon family....

Spell it tlacuaches and then hit images in a Google search.

I was going to say something related to a raccoon.... My first thought was a mongoose or a possum. I had a possum invade my laundry room a month or two ago (squeezed his way in through the dryer vent) and I NEARLY had a heart attack when I opened the laundry room door to fold laundry and he was sitting there growling at me!!
Another big Saturday night in SC!

Sorry about the trapping idea, but letting something like that crawl on the kids is just wrong. Now, if is a domesticated pet, go have at it. If the iguanas they drop on your shoulders for photo sessions don't bother you , then this will be ok. I have a problem with the sanitation of the situation...racoons, oppossums, skunks in our area all stink, and are usually filthy. We called the humane society to pick up a coon this summer that was in the throes of distemper, she would have lived another 2 weeks we were told, but it was a pathetic thing that was crawling over our lawn, followed by about 300 flies..... Wild animals are just that. Wild

I presume you're kidding? Why would you want to try moving 'em? It's not like they bite, or are a particular nuisance. After all, they were here first, and we're just guests.

Actually, the local people in the Yucatan rarely call these animals coatimundi. They usually call them tejon.
