Help ! Which one !

Buying a new camera, just getting into the DSLR's, which do you think is best for a beginner?
Canon Rebel XT or Nikon D40
Thanks,

I herd a lot of good things about the Canon Rebel XT , i have the next model up the Canon Rebel XTi and i absolutley love it. Not sure what the extras are on the new one but i imagine they are simillar in ease of use and pic quality, but than again it all depends on the lenses your willing to invest in.

I was thinking about the XTI, but the reviews have been better for the XT, don't know why , but I do believe the XTI has more pixels, 10 I think, I will do some more research, but I am glad to know you like it, that's encouraging. Thanks

is there a basic XTi?
On B&H Photo the XTi ranges from $595 to over $900.
Obviously, B&H is configuring the camera body with different lenses,
but is there a basic model?

I just purchased a XTi to fit with my exisiting lenses. A big advantage over the XT is the dust cleaning system; the sensor is ultrasonically vibrated on each shutdown to get rid of the dust that will get in there during lens changes (on a film body, the "sensor" was the film, which advanced each frame plus a speck of dust on the film would wash off in the developing process). It also uses a more advanced processor, higher megapixels, larger LCD on the back, more exposure modes...

While my decision was made by my pre-existing equipment, as I understand it from many reviews and forums I have been reading, some people say that the Nikon is slightly better; but that the famous Nikkor lenses have not been doing so well lately. I think that I would make the same decision even if I was starting from scratch, as the lenses are a major factor. That said, you must realize that the lenses that are bundled with the XTi are the lower end lenses that Canon makes; but you have the potential to move up to better later.

I'll probably be a making a post on my blog this weekend all about the new camera.

There isn't any variation within the models, but rather each model varies from the other. The XTi is one of the basic models, the only one more basic is the XT. Try looking up the price on a EOS-1Ds Mark III.

There is an XT and a XTI, xti being the new and improved I suppose. Some sites list it with lens and some list it with just the body. I am sorta new to this, have always had P&S.

I think it's more important to know how to get rid of the dust bunnies yourself. 90% of all dust can be blown out with a bulb blower. The other 10% need other cleaning methods. Perhaps Canon's system does work as advertised, but I still think it best to know how to do it yourself. I don't get much dust and change lenses frequently.

Not sure what this means, but Nikon glass is outstanding. I really think they are starting to make some excellent mid-priced lenses and most folks that are making the initial foray into digital slrs will probably buy only one or two lenses. With that said, I would suggest the D40x with the 18-200 mm lens. Total price at B & H is about $1350. You get a great camera and an outstanding lens that the user could leave on 100% of the time. Wide enough and quite a bit of reach to cover just about any scenario.

My .02.
