Not the first of this sort for DanD, I think. Something he wrote at some earlier point led me to use the ignore feature for the first and only time. Took him off ignore cause I am a sucker for a human interest story

There are a handful of peeps I'm waiting to see show up to cheer him on.

Here's something that I think will surprise a few folks: I think that they should return all the money to him, subject to an IRS audit. I think he should have to pay all of his unpaid back income tax subject to the three year statute of limitations (I think thats what it is) for audits. That is to say, I think he should pay three years in back taxes, interest, and a reasonable, but not overly punitive penalty.

Before y'all slam me on this, remember, he is likely in a very low income bracket, so we're probably only talking 5 to 10 thousand dollars of this 59K. After that, the rest should go back to him.

I believe in an open immigration policy, but I also believe that everyone should pay their fair share for the benefit of living in this country.

That's why I am ASTOUNDED that anyone opposed the senate amnesty proposal from a while back. Something like 13 million undocumented aliens here in this country, and hey, guess what, they are NOT going home!!! So why on earth would we NOT want to make them documented, legitimate, and start collecting taxes from them?!?!?

shiite Stewie, I bet there is almost that number here in Texas.....those estimates are so understated it's not even funny to me anymore........I still think they should put me and Jesus in charge of solving this problem........speakin of which, where has Jesus been......not that i'm lookin to see the light er anything, feelin kinda jewish today

Ever since his visit to Playa during wimmins week, I've seen neither hide nor hair of Jesus. I think they may have left him a dried out husk, wasting away in his home in smog city...

This is the strangest thing, I seem to be partially post blind. It must be a new condition. I saw a story about a poor unfortunate immigrant dishwasher. And then there was space as if someone had added comments. Is that what everyones responding to?

All this tax stuff related to basically impoverished immigrants is interesting to me...I doubt the guy would owe any taxes...first, were NO taxes withheld? Second, at $5.50 an hour...well that is about $11,000 a year if he got 40 hours a week....$22,000 if he worked two different jobs....given the likely unscrupulous nature of his employer(s), he probably was not paid overtime when he was supposed to.....not to mention the fact that he paid Social Security tax into the fund that he will never collect....and he probably was due the Earned Income Tax Credit.....so this is no big tax evader screwing the rest of us out of valuable tax dollars....
But whatever pittance he might owe, well I agree with Stewart...have him pay it and give the rest of this guys very hard earned money back....
And DanD...go spend a summer as a dishwasher sometime....

As Stewart so eloquently pointed out in another human interest thread, there is too much of the story left out for us to really form an opinion. But, as sad as it is, it does beg the question of his illegal status.
What laws do we chose to uphold and what do we turn the other cheek for because he's poor?

My personal opinion based on what has been presented to us...have him pay what ever taxes are due and send him on his way. Then go after the employer for hiring illegals and any other violations.
