Best way to do Tulum?
We are traveling with our 6 children ages 5 to 18. We would like to tour Telum. Would it be best to book a tour ahead of time? I've read about taking a bus or taxi. Is it easy to hire a guide once there? We'd really like the kids to hear the history and learn about the area. Thanks for your suggestions.

With 6 kids I would book a tour. We usually just take a Collectivo & go on our own.....But there are only 4 of us! ![]() |

Hiya. I am assuming you mean Tulum. If that's correct, then you can book a brilliant tour right here through this website, with (by all the recommendations you'll read about him) an awesome tour guide by all accounts. Details can be found here:

We took the Tulum tour back in '04 and really enjoyed it. Well worth the money and more importantly the vacation time. We met Mitch a couple of years ago and he seems to be a throughly enjoyable guy who has worked hard to build a very good reputation in the area. I would not hesitate to book one of his tours.
If you decide to go on your own or with another tour make SURE that you get to the ruins as early in the morning as possible. First, you will beat most of the crowds, and second, you will miss the heat of the day. Be sure to drink plenty of water. I would drink a half liter of water when I got up in the morning, a half liter just before the ruins tour and another when you finish. You may not feel it right away, but you will lose water very quickly standing in the sun and that could ruin the rest of your day. |

First off, I'd just like to point out that kids are not charged full price on these tours. Secondly, the Tulum & Beyond tour gives you a LOT more than just the ruins of Tulum, with snorkeling in magical cenotes and visiting a pristine beach for a great lunch. Kids and teenages usually love this tour.
If taking a tour is not for you for some reason or another, renting a private van with a driver is definitely the way to go for a family that size. Between colectivos and taxis that you will end up taking to get anywhere, it will not be that much more expensive than doing it on your own, and a LOT easier. Click here to give us your information and we'll get back to you with a quote. You could get if for just a half day and do only the ruins or do a full day and visit some other places of interest too, whatever you want (but I recommend the latter; the area is so much more than 'just' ruins). |

This is how we do it with 5 kids
We rent a minivan for the day. We did it for both Chitzen Itza and separately for Tulum. I like this approach simply because it provides a more intimate family experience and it is, of course, CHEAPER. It is very easy to hire your own tour guide in Tulum. I have done it twice. My advise is to get into site, send the kids down to the beach and look around, and observe a tour guides that you like. When they are through with their tour, approach them and ask what they charge for a one-half hour tour. With your kids, that will be the optimum length. A private guide can direct their presentation directly to your family. Once you are through, you are free to go to the beaches of Tulum, or to go to Xelha for snorkling, to a Cenote, or to more of several public areas that provide snorkling. If you rent, however, beware of the local police, who will attempt to collect $200 speeding fines in cash right there on the spot. For lack of a better option, you may want to try this website to make your reservation. I have had a hard time finding online reservation sites for car rentals. https://www.myrentalcar.com/book_new...ry=Mexico&lan=
There may be a better way, but I have not found it. |
