Cool laid back bars

Looking for ideas for after dinner laid back sort of bars with good music, ( not blasted ) we've long since past the 3 or 4am in the morning sort of mad nights out and like small bars, live music, good service, when on holiday. I have done some searching I promise, D Js, Bourbin St for blues muic looks good, any other ideas anyone, time is running out . Oh and good cocktails if possible, Thanks

The Beer bucket and La Ranita and Manne's come to mind...not really live music, but they play great recorded music!

Good recorded music is just fine. I think La Ranita is one of the ones with draft beer as well (I've spent too much time searching and written nothing down, )any idea about D.Js, is it a young crowd ?, anyone try Bourbons lately, is there music every night ?. Thanks.

You are correct. I believe Manne's has draft too (they at least have a tap - Susie?)

As James mentioned, DJ's has closed.

Chris Bolister plays every Friday night starting at around 8-ish (Mexican time) at the Pinche Gringo bar at Calle 26 and the corner of 1st avenue. This is my favorite bar and quite a few local ex-pats hang there (we call it "Keith's Bar/Captain Dave's North). Chris is an English singer/songwriter who plays a lot of great covers and some original stuff on his acoustic guitar (Johnny Cash, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, etc.). He also plays with a big group of guys on Thursdays and Saturdays at Bad Boys on the Beach between Calles 2 and 4. I think they start around 4 or 5 ish. You can also find music most nights at Bourbon Street, 5th avenue between 6 and 8 (but I think it starts fairly late) and Fah Bar at the hotel Siesta Fiesta, 5th avenue between 8th and 10th.

Quite late, also, you can find music at the Jam Session, which gets rave reviews from friends, but I've never been (I cannot stay out too late). This is, I think at 5th avenue and Calle 40 or 42 (anyone know?). Another place I've never been to but heard is good is the Cuban place at the Paseo Mall on the very south end of 5th avenue.

Can you tell I like live music?

Heather, many thanks the Friday night session at Pinche Gringo sounds good, maybe see you there, but not this Friday it will probably take us 2 or 3 days to get over the 15hrs or so travel !..

I always enjoyed Bourbon St. (can you say mango margarita?) but when we were there in February the music from across the street was so loud you couldn't carry on a conversation. And this was at "Happy Hour"!
Maybe the situation has improved.

Well, DJ moved away from Playa and back to the US. That's the only story as far as I see it.

Jam Session

You are right, Heather, re: the address of Jam Session. It's on the west side of Fifth Ave, on the corner. In fact, my son, Aaron, and his friend, Jeff, actually jammed there when they were visiting last time. On weekends, they often have some excellent jazz. In fact, the woman who sits in with the regular suspects at Captain Dave's on the beach sings there on occasion. I'm sure she could provide more details. Actually, as I recall, while they stay open late, I think they start at 10:00 pm usually, so it's not THAT late for somebody as young as you.

Insofar as D.J.'s go, my take is that he had a good run and the closing is old news.
