Split trip

We are looking at our trip in March again as as split trip. We have been to the area 6 times now. We have stayed in Tulum and Akumal, we love Isla Mujeres, ironically we have never stayed in Cozumel where we fly in and out. We have 8 days and my laid back family says stay put, I say NO, we never have. Always 3/4 days in Playa, where else?

Why not go inland and see some of the ruins? Have you read Thor's recent report?
See here (the actual report starts on page 5) : http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carm...st-2007-a.html

Inland

What you could do is go to Mérida. It is a beautiful colonial city that is about 4 hours inland. Mérida would be a nice base and there are several ruins close by such as Uxmal. Also, there is the route which is made up of little towns that Mayan merchants frequented in the Pre-Cortesian era. (Poc Chuc route, I think) One of these towns is famous for its Mayan huipiles or embroidered dresses. On your way back to Playa, you could stop to explore Chichen Itza and spend the night in Piste. Some interesting stops along the way are Coba, Valladolid, and Ek Balam.
