I don't have a blog. I like to read some of them. Some of them are very useful. There is one blog that I really enjoy that keeps up with the latest novels in Mexican American literature. Furthermore, the bloggers have posted useful information on the background of American literature and other topics related to this genre.
A blog is very good forum for beginning writers. There are several editors that peruse some blog sites and that is how some writers get invited to publish with some well-known publishers. A blog is a good way to get feedback for your writing. This is good for writers who do not have someone at home or at work to read their creative writing, essays, etc. You need to have someone look at your work before you send it off to a publisher but then you can have take the gamble and send it off with your blessings.
I have been meaning to start a blog. I started one awhile back and then didn't keep up with it. Thanks for the inspiration, Heather.

Some people have made money from their blogs. Corporations get very interested in some blogs when they are about surgeries, stocks, news, and other various topics. They will pay the blogger to allow them to brand the site. If the site gets many interested readers, the blogger makes quite a bit of money.

Susie, I am not angry with you. Write now. Don't wait. There are thousands of people, perhaps more, who are making a living from writing blogs.

As Jacko says, it is the wave of the future, but even earlier. It is the wave of NOW.

And blogs needn't even be literary to be successful.

dooce
Celebrity gossip juicy celebrity rumors Hollywood gossip blog from Perez Hilton
Diaryland members area
Bad News Hughes

These are just a few of the people who write successful blogs that I read. At least three of them have been commissioned by publishing houses to write books.

Susie, I know you love to read. If you are a good writer and have something to say, a blog can only help you. It can't hurt you.

I agree that it isn't about the money. If and when I start a blog it will be about my process of losing weight. I think that for me, it would be a helpful mechanism.

I suppose my love of blogs stems from my earlier love of 'zines. I love the idea of self-publishing. Of writing for the sake of writing and not for the sake of being "discovered." Of feeling that you have something worthwhile to say and saying it.

But I also am one who believes that everyone has a story, and that this story is important to tell, and to hear. As long as it is well written, that is.

Because in the end, it is your writing that is the reward. Not the accolades.

I read Perez Hilton occasionally. It's Rissask's fault (I think).

Btw, Heather... since you posted this thread earlier, I have been reading your blog and left a comment this afternoon on one of your entries. Since I know you and treasure your sense of humor and wit and intelligence, I was anxious to get in there and read your stuff. It doesn't disappoint. Much of it is very moving. Much of it has that biting humor that cracks me up often. I hope it is all you hope for it be, whether that's simply for personal release, or social contacts, or being discovered. You're an excellent and entertaining writer.
