accomodation advice?

Thanks in advance...
I believe most of the resort accomodations are located further away from 5th avenue, Playacar, etc. But what resorts are located in close proximity to the downtown area? I am aware of the Gran Porto Real, but would prefer to avoid the all inclusive option. What is the newer resort located just north of Gran Porto across Consitiut...?
Any other options? We are bringing the kids so a resort is important, all inclusive is not, and something within walking distance of 5th.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Across the street from the GPR is the Royal Playa del Carmen (no kids) - an all-inclusive
In fact, all of the "resorts" are all-inclusive i believe
Are you looking for a hotel in town?
Check out the "trip planning" tab above
(Popular is La Tortuga and Playa Maya, but there are many others)

Hmm... how do you define "resort?"

resort definition?

I guess I would define it as having a pool, restaurant(s), bar, and maybe activities. I stayed at Playa Maya last year, very nice, but I would define it as a hotel I guess because of the size of the hotel, lack of a large pool with activities, etc.
Good question though...my wife and I would prefer something smaller and more intimate, but with the kids it's important to have a places to hang out, walk around, larger pool, etc.

shangri la

I did submit a request to Shangri La for rates, it looks pretty close to what we are looking for. Maybe a little far down the beach for the kids to walk back to 5th, but it's probably fine. Pretty pricey but their rate sheet isn't very clear though so I'm not sure.

Check under trip planning on this site. One that comes to mind is the All Riviera Resort, 2nd street on the beach, plus many smaller hotel such as Playa Maya at 8th on the beach. Both are only a block away from 5th

How old are the kids? We've been bringing the grandchildren for 7 years now and have never been to a resort. If we have a beach and a pool and food to eat, it's a winner. We also do trips to ruins, CrocoCun, etc. Plus I make sure there are plenty of books and one-on-one time for all.

I think Babs is pointing you in the right direction. To oversimplify it, your options are pretty much 1) A hotel, some of which will have restaurants, but by no means all. Tend to have smaller pool facilities. No organized activities. They're there to provide accomodations. Often not exactly "kid friendly." 2) A resort, which will have a variety of dining options, generally a larger recreational area, with pool etc, organized activities. More of a family orientation. These are pretty much all "All Inclusive" type operations, and tend to be somewhat out of the downtown area, with the exception of the ones Babs mentioned. You're really looking at an apples & oranges situation. Neither is either better or worse...just different. Don't know if this helps, or just muddies the waters?
