Things we can’t live without OR Things we can live without
I was thinking of starting a thread called “Things we can’t live without” but as the idea developed I decided to name the thread “Things we can’t live without or Things we can live without” because they interact somewhat.
I ran into this article and it made me laugh. Excerpt: “I don’t know the history behind the ring tone, but I’ll venture to guess that some budding entrepreneur was sitting around dreaming up ways to annoy the you-know-what out of people. Instead of having a phone simply ring, he decided, wouldn’t it be cool to have it startle everyone within hearing distance with loud, garbled music?” http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturd...s/070603.shtml Then I started thinking what are the things that I can’t live without or vice versa – what are the things that I can live without. And here I don’t mean things like family, kids, friends, or things that are necessary for your survival like food, water. I am talking about material things. What makes one thing a necessity and another luxury. Well, I can assure you that I can live without some fancy ring tone. Actually I always use the ring tones that the cell phone comes preset with. I don’t bother to change them. They sound just fine to me the way they are. Not only that - I can live without a cell phone too. I can’t live without TV, but basic TV programming is enough for me, just to be able to check the news and to see a good movie from time to time. I don’t have to have HBO, Showtime, etc. I can’t live without computer even if I use it only as a typing machine or place to store my pictures. But since I am connected to Internet I can do all kind of research on it, and read the news, and meet people, and chat with friends. But do I need high-speed Internet? Honestly, I don’t care – I can live without high-speed Internet. If I can’t afford it, dial-up will do. I can’t live without cloth washer and cloth dryer. I really miss the smell of the freshly washed clothes while you are hanging them on the cloth line in your backyard, but in winter it takes too long for them to dry, so I can’t give up my dryer, sorry. ![]() I can’t live without picture camera. I just love taking pictures. It is wonderful way to preserve memories. It doesn’t have to be fancy, top of the line, just to take decent pictures. I can’t live without my curling iron. ![]() But I can live without: dishwasher (I love washing dishes), microwave (it may be handy but won’t complicate my life if I didn’t have one), flat-screen TV (TV is a TV), mp3 player, iPod, treadmill (the last 2 I don’t own). I am sure there are some more. It is your turn now. P.S. Research made on this subject - Luxury or Necessity? Things We Can’t Live Without: The List Has Grown in the Past Decade http://pewresearch.org/assets/social/pdf/Luxury.pdf Last edited by Shawny; 10-08-2007 at 04:41 PM.. |

Can't live without:
- My Wife. I married much better than she did... - Red meat, medium-rare. - Cabernet Sauvignon or a good Chianti. - A true joy for cooking. - My job. I love my work and it makes all the other stuff possible. - Living on the outer edge of the concrete jungle. I can see moose in 15 minutes. Can't live with: - People who can't multi-task (but insist on tryiing) a cell-phone and an automobile. - Rascism & Prejudice. - Overcooked seafood. - Domestic beer. - Un(der)educated opinions. - Religious zealots. ![]() Living "without" anything else may seem difficult at the time, but even that subsides. ![]() It's not too deep and it's all good! Keep smilin'!
