Fly and Deep Sea Fishing
I am coimng down there on Sat for one week. I am planning on bringing my fly fishing setup with me. It's saltwater ready, is there anywhere to use it? Also, how has the deep sea fishing been? I don't want to drop $400 and get nada.

Fishing
I have gone deep sea fishing a few times in playa. Boat charters were out of a town south of playa. We have caught kingfish, grouper and barracadas. We have always caught something. Never seen any fly fishing. Good Luck!

Both our son's go fly fishing for bone fish at Acention Bay they set up there guide online by just typing in bone fishing excustion. They have always had a wonderful time uslually catch lots of fish and really have enjoyed there guides. If you are staying at an AI they usually can set you up with something.....Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Take your fly rod - at least an 10 weight. Find an area of beach to the north of Playa or south of Playacar. Early morning & toward sunset, I've seen "bones" and tarpon working the shore line.
Also saw a guy standing waist deep water with a school of (what looked like) Jack Cravel around him. He was tossing out pieces of hot dog or something. you could have tossed a fly or a spoon in the school & caught a fish... BTW...I'll have my 10 wt with me in April... Be sure to let us know if you have success! |

We have been deep sea fishing at Akumal, it's actually inshore fishing (they don't go out too far unless you request I guess). We just booked by talking to a captain on the main beach there when the fishermen came in the day before.
Don also booked a guy who 'parks' his panga near the Gran Porto Real (do the panga fishermen still park there?) Caught a sierra mackerel and other assorted small fish. you can book bigger fishing boats through this site, see HERE...and they have pangas too! It would be easier to do it that way. ![]() Not really any fly fishing around Playa except down at Boca Paila or especially Punta Allen (tarpon, permit, and bonefish.) They are quite far south of Playa, south of Tulum, google the names for more info. Don has brought a surf rod and fished in the surf a few times in Mexico, never had much luck (and he was only fishing around rocks). The locals who surf cast have much better luck, and all you need for that is some line and a hook. ![]() |

I bought my dad an 8 or 9 wt, I can't remember. It's a saltwater rod. i think mine is an 8 wt that is freshwater. We plan on cleaning the rods and reels after we go out. If we pay for a charter i will probably use a rod they provide, but we may just try the beaches. I think it would be a fun way to waste time while we are there.

Make a quick trip to Wal-Mart when you get there and buy a small can of WD-40 & "canned-air". After washing out your reels with fresh water spray them with WD-40 & then remove the excess with the "canned-air". Remember to use liberally - you want to make sure all sand & salt water residue is removed...Plus I don't think the airlines would like you having either of these in your luggage... It's amazing how salt water & a few grains of sand will ruin a reel in no time at all... Tight lines!!! |
