where should all the fishermen go?

After reading the article that Susie submitted, it made me start thinking about all the fishermen in Playa and what will happen to them?

When we first went to Playa, it was called a fishermens village and there was about 6 commerical fishermen-Jim couldnt even find someone to take him fishing-this was 18 years ago.

As some of you know,we have a friend and partner, who has a fishing business in Playa-he also is the president of the union now. He is very concerned about the future of the fishermen-especially with all the changes on the beach. There is talk of putting up a wooden pier for the boats but this is only talk right now.

So what do you think should happen to the fishermen? Stay as is? Get the pier built? Or get rid of them completely?

I am sure you know how I feel-keep them and figure out a way to keep them.

Don't they still tie up at the beach by the Gran Porto Real, and there were lots of pangas up by Coco Beach and at Akumal our last trip in 2005, and the marina at Puerto Adventurous have fishermen right?

As long as there are fish to catch and people to buy them, there'll be fishermen...right?

not sure about Akumal-yes there is still many pangas from the ****** all the way to Coco Beach-but for how long was my concern. The developers of the high priced condos going in do not want the pangas in front of their properties and money talks. I dont think its that simple-if there are fish to catch and people to buy. Most of the fish in the markets do not come from Playa-some but not most and like you said there is a marina in PA-and that will not go away. Tourist will have to go there. Not a huge problem for tourist. Big problem for the fishermen in Playa-many this is the only trade they know past on by their fathers and grandfathers.

Oh no, if the fishermen move will the pelicans know where to find their lunch?

Actually it is really fun to walk up there when the fishing boats come in and see los pelicanos battleing it out with the gulls. I'd hate to miss the spectacle, but time does move on

I also am concerned for the fishermen. Many of the boats are tied up in front of the old Blue Beach, which as you know has been torn down and high priced condos are being built. Sadly, the fishering boats may be forced out of that area. I do hope that something can be done to prevent this.

I heard from a few different Playa locals-including fishermen and somebody who works for the developer of the condos- that there is currently lobbying going on to relocate the fisherman
I loved to stay at Blue Beach and watch them early in the morning.
We went out fishing with one of them this summer, my daughter caught a grouper and the little place next to Blue Beach cooked it for us-awesome.

That would have been Paraiso Beach Bar that cooked for you -- I've heard they are gone now, also

How do Playa fishermen make a living?

By fishing tours, at least for most of them, not by catching and selling fish, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not sure, but the original poster was talking about where the commercial fishermen are to go...she said 18 years ago there were only 6 though? I am kind of confused.

In Zihuatanejo they have a fishing cooperative and panga fishermen sell their daily catch at a market....but does this happen in Playa?

Good to see them taking steps to preserve the fishing in the area.

maybe the gov't should be as smart in regards to the Nom 29 Shark Norma in Cabo.

It looks like the valid protests are starting to be heard...read here

Although Shark Norma sets regulations for commercial fishing, conservationists argue that it does little to protect the other species that always end up in shark fishermen's nets and on their longline hooks such as whales, dolphin, sea lions, endangered sea turtles as well as highly prized game fish such as dorado and marlin.

Conapesca's news release, according to those who have read it, downplays criticisms, but does say “changes will be made to the new regulations to prohibit the commercialization of billfish and cites Mexican fisheries law (Articulo 13, La Ley de Pesca) to clarify that species protected by the 50-mile conservation zones are reserved for the exclusive use of the sport fishery and may not be taken by other than recreational fishing gear.”

Please say it isn't so, that the Pariaso is gone.
They cooked up the fish my husband caught a couple of years ago.
That is still one of our favorite little hole in the wall places.
Sadly, they are all disappearing very rapidly.
We really miss the Playa from a few years ago.
