Chris in VT posted some pics of the Royal Playa Del Carmen in his picture report two topics down on the general board. No sandbags. North of the pier. The Gran Port Real is on the south side, does have sandbags, not great swimming from the beach though.

Having said that, its only a matter of a few metres from the front of one of the Real's to the other (Gran Porto to the Royal) so easy peasy lemon squeezy to swim in the sea in front of the Royal but then retire to sunbeds outside the Gran Porto when you come out.

I wouldn't want to do it. You'd have to walk across the road by the pier and then around the front. I guess if the price difference were huge it would be ok. Instead of going over to the Royal to swim I'd probably just walk down to the right a little if I were staying at the Gran.

You missed my point Suze. I was agreeing with you about turning right and saying that's what I will personally do when I am staying at the GPR in a couple of months. But that for me, its not a big hassle either to step over a sandbag or two if I really really wanted to get in the water directly opposite the GPR.
