Smoothie Schmoozing & Absinthe Inquiry
Mentioned over and over again...smoothies....what flavors are popular...are they healthy and alcholic or just plain healthy? Also, can you purchase absinthe in Playa?

absinthe: yes, you can. but.... why? there have been discussions on absinthe here before and you can find them with the search function.
in a nutshell: it is merely alcohol, and expensive at that. I think there are better anise-flavored drinks out there for much less that don't involve some false claims of thujone-induced trippage. My 2 pesos. Have fun! |

Haven't tried before
I guess I want to try it because I'm 55 and have never experienced....the fact that it's illegal here in the states adds to the allure...I understand there's lots of misleading info but I'm not looking for that type of experience...just something to be a little naughty.

There's lots to do in Playa if you feel like being a little naughty! As for driking experiences you might not otherwise indulge in at home...Try some really nice tequila like Clase Azul instead of the high-alcohol (rocket fuel) wormwood distillate known as absinthe. BTW, absinthe its not really the mythological elixir that history has made it out to be. However, a few glasses of Clase Azul should get you going...in the best possible way!! And it will taste good while you are getting there.....

I don't know if any restaurants in Playa actually offer Absinthe (the old Apassionado, now gone, used to have a bottle at the bar), but you can buy it in the liquor stores on 5th avenue. You will find the US approved fake stuff, a bright neon green Mexican Absinthe and the more expensive French and /or Czech wormwood based drink.
And don't let the party poopers try and disuade you. True worm wood based Absinthe does have a kick. Moreover as I have said before on this forum, what the naysayers don't realize is that there is flavor in the fact it is forbidden. And while personally I prefer the power of Green Chatreuse if I want to dance with the devil, I think the tradition and ceremony (sugar, ice water, silver spoon, etc) of Absinthe is fun and worth the effort. Go for it.Papa T |

Be careful Papa T, I might just take that whole "party pooper" refrence as a challenge and in a few short weeks you may find me at your doorstep asking to be introduced to the green fairy .....

Krisnles- if you go looking for Absinth (wether in Playa or some place else): there is a loophole that is being used by manufacturers here in Europe (specifically from France and Czechia) that allows production of Absinthes with up to 35 mg/ Kg of Thujon in them. They have to be labelled as "bitterliquor" (this is a direct translation from German, I am not sure what the exact word in English is.....maybe google some Absinth-sites and you'll find it there). Then there are also those mentioned by Tony above (and the one sitting on my shelf) that adhere to the EU regulations and DO contain Thujon but only up to 10mg/ Kg. So when in Playa maybe check the shelves for those Absinths labelled as "bitterliquors" - they do contain Thujon and much more than the normal ones from Czechia (which contain it as well). |

I looked up the translation that should be on the label of the Czech products if they contain more than 10mg/kg Thujon- it is "Horka lihovina". So that is what you should look for if you don't want to end up with green-coloured alcohol only.

If it's Tuesday, it must be Playa
Thanks everyone for all the info...I'm looking forward to being brought up to par on all the ways I can be "a little naughty" in Playa....with only 2 days until departure, I'm now counting the hours!

I tried Absinsthe once, I am 120 lbs, dont drink much, dont do drugs and sat down and had a "healthy" shot with my 300lb brother in law, the two of us sat in our chairs and giggled at one another for hours!! I think it hit me a little harder, probably won't do it again, but it was fun!! LOL
