I keep hearing y'all talking about pre-tanning so you don't burn...I would be careful thinking that tanning is somehow protecting you... read this..the way to keep from burning is to use a relatively high SPF lotion. Works everytime for me.

I've had 3 skin cancer surgerical procedures on my face including one requiring the skills of a plastic surgeon.
I don't fake bake. I don't lay in the sun for hours in Playa. But... I'm active and definitely do not avoid the sun while in Playa. I use 30 SPF all over, usually once a day in the morning before we leave the room. I'm fair (blonde, blue-eyed, Swedish/English bloodline), I freckle, and a "dirty beige" is a downright bitchin' tan for me. I rarely burn unless I miss spots with the sunscreen. In my book (and in any good dermatoligist's book), fake baking is just asking for trouble. Don't let vanity cause you to turn a blind eye to the inherent dangers of it. I've learned to not give a rat's ass what anyone thinks of my paleness. It's a lot more attractive than my skin cancer surgery scars. |

The first surgery (basal cell) I had done required removing an area about the size of a quarter on my upper right temple (straight over from the corner of my right eye, at the hairline). Because of the rather large-ish removal of tissue, they determined that a plastic surgeon's skills would be needed in order to stitch it up in such a way as to not affect my eye or eyebrow (i.e. pull the skin). He did a fabulous job, and now after almost 14 years, there's a very faint scar that is mostly hidden by my eyeglass frame. The other two surgeries involved a section directly below my right nostril (again, luckily, basal cell). I had the Mohs surgery done at Mass General which has a 99% success rate. Didn't even require a stitch - just a pressure bandage. But... I beat the odds and a few years later the cancer returned. This time, a different doctor, a local dermatologist, went in with a grapefruit spoon and dug a hole to China. Ended up with about 8 stitches and a scar resembling the Toyota logo. But that scar is also fading, and hey... I never wanted to grow a moustache anyway. ![]() ![]() Good luck with your surgeries, Jacko. Scars on men are sexy. And I'm sure Linda has a cute nurse's outfit to wear for you during your recovery phase.

We both pre-tan before our winter trips. Usually only about 100 minutes, ten ten minute sessions for the 2-3 weeks prior to departure. We both tan easily, rarely burn, and have very few moles/freckles.
We do it for vanity (not wanting to be ghostly white the first few days) and also to lessen the chances of burning the first few days, as we are in the sun and ocean much of the time and even 45 spf wouldn't cut it. The one time we didn't have time to pre-tan we both got burned backs/shoulders the second day there. ![]() While there I use 15 spf, 20 on my face (and I wear a hat in the sun- wrinkles stay away! ).

I have to for about 8 sessions. I don't spend enough time outside during the year. So basically I have that farmers tan on my hands and face but the body is pretty pale.
Gonna start in a few days to get ready for my trip.

No fake bake for me. I've tried it and it didn't work for me. I'm white with freckles and using 50 SPF and staying out if the sun during the mid afternoon hours keeps me in the pink. No burn though and that's the way I like it.

I do usually do a pre-tan before I go. Usually just 2 or 3 times to get a little color back. I know it has nothing to do with there being less chance of burning when I get in the sun, its just a good excuse to get a tan in the middle of winter.
