Short and to the point: nope. They do run the Centro de Salud where Dr. Oscar works, but that is about it. There was a car with donations from the port authority coming in when we left. But grand scale government help? No.

I'm taken- my future husband is Pablo, the little boy in the second pic of the kids and on my arm in the group pic.
Sorry guys.

Girl, come on, change your avatar!

Glad you went to Mahahual and had an impressing experience. The pics of the children are so heartbreaking....

Thank you so much.

Andi- I did load my cam and phone before leaving but both died instantly after a few hours......must be the heat.

Don't you have spare batteries/akkus? I never leave without them... well, too late for that now. Just give us the pics you are able to get! I know I will get a written report as well.

Just a couple of other things I have to share about our trip yesterday...see the girl in the brown dress in the front of the group? She is holding two cases of baby food for her little brother. She is a very responsible 10 year old- proud that her mom sent her for the supplies. She is also holding a purple princess crown like one that my daughter had when she was four. When she saw that in one of the bags-there were a number of them-she asked me so shyly if she could have it, looked at it as if it was the best thing she'd ever been given and put it on proudly. It was heartwrenchingly touching that this little plastic toy made her so happy.

In a funnier vein, a moment I so regret not catching on tape: little Cyndi, who was so charming, was asking us all our names. So we said "Susie" and "Genny" (Vieve is, as my one friend says, not a good name for Mexicans to pronounce) and Rick says "Rick" and Cyndi made a face and said "Rec?"So Babaloo, feeling like a "y" might help says "Ok Ricky, like Ricky Martin" and gives them his version of Ricky Martin dancing...as you can imagine, this cracked them up

A little while later I caught some of the girls giggling, saying "Ricky Martin" and imitating Rick!

One thing to add- not sure if Rick, our heroic driver, took pics at Ivans house....but we went to see him and his brother Freddy as well.

Here is another moment: Freddy came up to me while I was kneeling, trying to connect with Ivan.

Comes closer and closer- and put his forehead to my head, his nose to my nose. And started staring into my eyes and smiling and giggling.
I think Susie was right when she said it were my eyes that fascinated him and made him do that. We sat there for what- 15 seconds? doing that and then he toddled of again to flirt with the others.

Great job, everyone! It is so rewarding, isn't it? Great photos, guys!

I've been meaning to write on the other thread that when we use the name "Majahual" to describe where we have been going with supplies since the hurricane hit, it encompasses several areas, not just Majahual centro.

KM 55, one of the hardest hit areas, and where Susie, Joana, Rick, and Vieve visited in these photos, is one of the areas we've visted as well. In addition, there are 3-4 other areas to which our supplies have been brought. Not trying to horn in on this wonderful thread, I just know there has been some confusion with some people thinking we are only bringing despensas and donations to Majahual centro.

Hopefully we can all put together another trip soon!

Joana, just read your long, long email... it is so heartbreaking... hope you'll not have to find new friends.

For you others: Joana has been writing a report to all her german friends and I am in the mail-group. So I know she asked her friends to help the mayan people as right now due to the circumstances they are not able to help themselves.

Andrea
