In the past few days in Calgary there have been lock downs of schools for different reasons. I think that all schools need to take every threat very seriously. In the past it has been very easy to look back after a tragedy and see that there was lots of warning signs. I think that schools and parents need to keep the lines of communication open so that our kids stay safe.

Here in Ottawa we have had different schools closed at least 25 times since September, due to anonymous calls to police about a man with a gun. The schools go into lockdown mode for a couple of hours, not mention that emergency equipment is tied up while they do a search for the gunman. They know that this is kids making the calls but they can't ignore it in case there is a real incident. One concern is that someone could be in serious trouble and not get help in time while they search for the elusive gunman. The police have somehow been able to identify and pick up and charge a couple of kids with mischief, but they know there are more kids involved than what has been caught to date. The police have decided to not give out any further particulars regarding these incidents as this may be fueling the fire. The police fear that crying wolf may lead to problems with people not taking care in case there is a real incident down the road. The students are getting annoyed as being in lockdown is not fun, they have to cram in the missing classwork next class and while in lockdown mode, they can't socialize so it is not a fun time.
