Invention Of the Year: The iPhone
Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 By LEV GROSSMAN The thing is hard to type on. It's too slow. It's too big. It doesn't have instant messaging. It's too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it's too cheap!) It doesn't support my work e-mail. It's locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—we're sick of hearing about it! Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons: Invention Of the Year: The iPhone - TIME

call me a technophobe or what ever you want, but my major problem with it is an increased diversion of attention to what you are doing. Yesterday evening I was driving with my wife and was stopped at a 4 way intersection. 3 cars proceed before me and every driver was talking on their cell phone. Across the intersection was a State Trooper. I made the comment that I wish cell phone usage while driving was a primary offense. After that, I found myself looking to see how many drivers we passed were on their phones. The majority had a phone to their ear!
With the Blackberry (and yes I have one for work purposes) attention became focused on reading/answering email while driving. then all the phones came out with texting...they even hold contests for that! No the Iphone comes out as a mini laptop if you will. Nobody pays attention to what they are doing these days. Nothing makes me shake my head more than sitting in an airport and watching people walk along carrying on what looks like a conversation with themselves! Now we have people walking around looking like extras from a Star Trek episode. Been to a movie theater lately? Lights go out and peoples heads are blinking blue or they have the phone screen in front of their face...not sure why they came to the movie in the first place! Ok rant over...my cell phone is ringing! |
