Religious fanatics are religious fanatics no matter what the religion. Some protest funerals, others fly planes into buildings.
I truly do not see much difference between Phelps and Bin Laden. Dante never discovered the 10th level, which will be both of these guys resting place

Well crap...
I don't understand how someone can get fired for saying nappy and its not protected but this hateful verbal diarrhea is BALTIMORE -- Leading constitutional scholars say the multimillion-dollar award this week to the father of a Marine killed in Iraq is likely to be overturned because the church members who protested his son's funeral enjoy broad protection under the 1st Amendment. Wednesday, a jury in U.S. District Court in Baltimore found in favor of Albert Snyder, the Marine's father, after deliberating for about nine hours over two days. Jurors unanimously agreed that the Snyders' privacy had been breached by the Westboro Baptist Church, a family-based conservative religious group that assembled on public property near the funeral motorcade. As mourners for Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder drove by March 10, 2006, members of the fundamentalist Christian church based in Topeka, Kan., held up signs reading such things as "Thank God for dead soldiers." The $10.9-million verdict marked the first successful civil claim against Westboro, whose congregants have picketed with anti-gay placards at military funerals across the United States. Experts on the 1st Amendment expressed doubt that the verdict and sizable damage award against Westboro would survive appellate review before the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va. "I have spoken to a number of 1st Amendment attorneys today, and every one of them believe the case will be reversed and should be reversed," said Ronald K.L. Collins, a scholar at the First Amendment Center in Washington. In contentious rallies, Westboro members regularly preach that tragic losses of life, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, represent moral payback for the general acceptance of homosexuality in U.S. society. Three adults and four children from the group picketed at Lance Cpl. Snyder's funeral at St. John Roman Catholic Church in Westminster, Md. Westboro members insisted that their demonstration, about 1,000 feet from the Westminster church, took place legally. Albert Snyder, who lives in York, Pa., argued that news of the protest -- he did not see the demonstrators' message boards on the day of the funeral -- deeply disturbed him and exacerbated his depression over the loss of his only son. Westboro members have 10 business days to ask the federal judge who oversaw the case to review the verdict and damage award. Afterward, according to attorneys, they have 30 days to decide whether to appeal. Unless they can post a bond worth 120% of the award, they must secure a judge's order to stave off payment to Snyder, according to his attorney. Jonathan Katz, an attorney for the church and its founder, said he planned to ask U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett to suspend the judgment while his clients appeal.

However, they can't come within 1/4 of a mile of where the services are being held....we knew they were coming. It pretty much renders them harmless, and families can get in and out without hearing much... The only issue is the exposure they get from the press when they're in town....

are these people for real??? This is what free speech is about? Sounds like these people are undeniable, certifiable lunatics. How could they do such a thing? have they no sympathy for the family of these soldiers? It's just so....WRONG.

These people are the easiest to brainwash. They just can't see how wrong they are...like many people, they just want to fit into a group where hate, intolerance and denial is part of the norm. |

You know, this is one debate I've had with very religious family members, regarding the Bible and what it says about homosexuality. It really is sooo interpretive, like everything in a book was written in ancient languages over many centuries.
Here is some quoted info in this: The Old Testament story of the city of Sodom is often wrongly used as "biblical proof" that God is displeased with homosexuals. According to many people these cities were destroyed because residents committed the "sin of homosexuality." Yet, in every other reference in the Bible (and there are several) the condemned "sins of Sodom" are such things as pride and inhospitality. The expression used to vilify the anti-gay Christians is often "bring these men out to us, that we may know them". The Hebrew verb yadha ("to know") used here is found 943 times in the Hebrew Scriptures and in only ten places does it mean sexual intercourse - each time referring to heterosexual relations. But even if the people of Sodom did attempt a "homosexual" attack upon the angels, the passage would serve as a clear condemnation of rape (certainly an extreme form of inhospitality). Rape, either heterosexual or homosexual, is sin under any circumstances. "God created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve," is a line used by many folks like this. But taking these scriptures as literal guidelines would prove very peculiar, given that the story of Adam and Eve and their children - again, taken in such a literal way - would imply that brothers and sisters make suitable husbands and wives. How else could Adam and Eve's children have multiplied? Another scripture used to show the Bible condemns a gay lifestyle is found in the book of Leviticus, 18:22 and 20:13: "Thou shalt not lie with a man as thou would like with a woman." But as the site says, "Anyone who quotes these prohibitions should read the entire chapters or the whole book of Leviticus. Levitical law demands no eating of pork, lobster, shrimp, oysters, or rare meat; no intercourse during the menstrual period; no interbreeding of cattle; and a whole host of others laws, including the law to kill all people who commit adultery." Interesting stuff, anyways. |

The old testament is a good read for boble stories but christians are supposed to live by the new testament, which changed some of the rules..ex: an eye for an eye...to turn the other cheek. Many of the storie in the old testament were passed down a long time before ever being written...kinda like "gossip".
Anybody who calls themselves a good christian has already commited the sin of vanity. religion just like everything else should be taken in moderation. |
