When to use the report post icon ???
Ok Mods and others who want to give their two cents !!
![]() When should we use the report a post icon ?? I dont want to waste any valuable mod time...but it does say: "This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts." So if we see a post that is rude/offensive/problematic etc - should we report it ???? Or should we join in the grade school free for all food fight with name calling and witty sarcasm ? Is there really a "mod approved response" to some of the shenanigans that get posted ? Or is the ignore feature our best friend ? I can only wonder what some of the newbies (who dont know the personalitys) to this board think when they read some of the bickering that goes back and forth. I report mostly spam (as this sometimes is posted at times when I get up but you are all still asleep). If post is possibly offensive I report it as well but leave it to the moderators to decide if they need to do something (happened 2 or 3 times that I did that but those were not against one specific person).
If people are just rude to each other I don't report it as I think that we are all adults and they should clear this up between them via PM (I do have an oppinion about it though and attacking someone publicly falls back on the person who does it although she or he plays the role of the innocent - just mho). I report spam and advertising. As far as the "problematic" area goes, I think I have reported there it maybe twice. You'd like to think we're all adults, and should know better, but there are all too many examples that this is not the case. I have some problem with identifying what constitutes rudeness, fighting, or harassment. That's pretty much a moving target. A lot of it is in the eye of the beholder. However, if you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.
As far as the "ignore" feature goes, I've never used it, and doubt I ever will. I'd rather do my ignoring on a personal / manual basis. There's plenty of threads I never look at based on who's started them. or who the active participants are. I suppose I likely miss the occasional nugget by handling it that way, but I'd like to think I can recognize where something is going, or who's taking it there, and censor accordingly. I've generally got better things to do with my time. |

I don't see where the mods are being hassled by the volume of reported posts, basically, 50% are from one member and are directed at another member because of general dislike and not because the "offender" actually directed any comment whatsoever at the "offended" ....... I generally ignore those reports because I feel if the comment was directed at a certain member, THEY should be reporting it, not someone else just assuming it was offensive to the member the post was directed at........ from there, about 35% are spam reports..... the remaining 15% are generally acted upon in some way, usually by locking the thread and letting ego's chill out....... the most recent valid reports by a couple of long term members resulted in a thread being deleted due to the establishment of a second identity.......I did not want to just lock the thread because it seemed that would almost be taken as toleration of a prohibited activity........so, in short, please keep reporting posts you find offensive, and keep sending me PM's telling me how unfair and inconsistent I am in moderation of this loony bin and I will continue not losing sleep over any of it

Spam - I let other people report it and it does not seem to be a problem here.
Attacks / excessive name-calling - ask the person to stop it on the thread in which it occurs. Do it in public if you can. That is my preference, and I have done so a couple of times. Bother the moderators? Nah, they are busy people and they generally leave me and my parrot alone

I thought "bite me" was an approved insult... so I will use it here in regards to your second sentence... Bite Me. ![]() I'm not sure (I'm the newbie mod) but I think that the mods that are mods for that specific subforum get the emails when you send a "report post" message... plus the administrators... not all mods get all emails... I think... I think some peeps throw comments at each other and they don't mind... but sometimes what starts as fairly innocuous comments can escalate quickly to a very heated, ugly discussion... so seeing a thread that is turning that way and giving a heads up about that thread isn't a bad thing... thing is, sometimes the thread resolves itself on its own and no moderating is necessary, so the email will in essence be ignored as far as acting on it.... |
