Spanish lesson por favor; EU vs: EU

I always pick up one of our Spanish language newspaper weeklys here, mostly for my wife to hone up on her Spanish, but I enjoy looking at it too.

Recently I was very confused by an article about the EU, until it dawned on me they were talking about the "Estadas Unidos", not the European Union

How do Spanish speakers differentiate, especially in print? Just by the context, or do they call the European Union something else?

They were talking about the Estados Unidos=United States of America (not the United States of Mexico). In Spanish European Union=Union Europea, ergo UE.

Anglophones speak back to front.

You'll also see the US referred to as EE.UU in the Mexican press. I think that's because both words appear in the plural and are therefore repeated in the acronym.
