Community Service in PDC?

Hi to all -
We are coming down to PDC for 10 days (Nov 15 - 25) and was wondering if there are any opportunities for our family to donate some time to the community. Our daughter (13years) hs required service hours for school and what better place to give back to the community but in Playa! Please let me know if there are places to volunteer time. My Spanish is nil, but my husband and daughter are pretty OK.
Thanks and happy Thanksgiving!

I don't think the Mexican penal code makes provision for doing community service where foreigners are concerned.

Sweetie, people do community service in order to do something good for their communities, not because they are criminals. LOL. Like Habitat for Humanity, etc.

I think he is referring to the fact that you need a special visa to do community service/volunteer.....I think
Contact Angel Notion...or google the Hekab be library in Akumal. My kids took some toys/school supplies down & donated them to the library... We are looking forward to washing the puppies!!

Oh! Really never thought of that. Lot's of churches from here take people down there for Habitat, so it never occured to me.
Puppies it is! Or feeding and combing kitties. How do we get in touch with them? (the owners, not the animals)

I know a guy who volunteered to carry some newspapers for a friend. He ended up in Jail for 3 months. Now it wasn't comunity service but it was voluntary, only one time and for five minutes. You decide.

Washing the dogs at Andy and Jens, a different story - no problem.

washing puppies is the best bet, but make sure you donīt ever mention to anyone that you are actually doing "work" You do require a special visa to volunteer for any organization, like Red Cross, Angel Notion or any NGO
I requested once one for a volunteer EMT and just the request documents costs 40 usd and then the visa is 150 USD we decided to request it anyway and then the documents or granting of same was still pending at the time he was ready to go back.
The newspaper carrying incident was a shocking learning experience for a lot of us about immigration laws here.
It is a pitty, I wish they would be more leniant about volunteering but that is a concept that we just donīt handle much here unfortunately

My daughter's favorite thing to do in Playa is to visit the Peanut Pet Shelter. Her and her cousins opted to do that rather than go to Xcaret.

Great idea to take supplies to Hekab Be...we also took stuff to the school in Akumal Pueblo that they were very grateful to have.We gave clothes to the villagers in Coba a couple years ago-they need things, but that's pretty far afield unless you have a car.

Also, wonder if Centro Ecologica Akumal has anything to do this time of year? My daughter and her cousins did the turtle walk this year and got to help out on that-great experience! Their websiteCentro Ecologico: Akumal, Mexico, Ocean Research, Environmental Education, Sea Turtle Protection, Marine Research They had volunteer students from all over this summer-but probably they had visas?

CEA has a section about offering opportunities for students who want to complete their service requirements: click on "visitor programs "and then click on "Social Service"

With all due respect to you, Bar Girl, I couldn't help but think of some of my friends -- professional people -- who have been creative with their community service for their OWI convictions ... because they have been Bar People.

Now, mind you, they usually use their expertise to serve the community, like a financial planner writing financial policies for the local literacy coalition.

But, I could just see some of these folks: "Let's see? I can go to Playa del Carmen and help with (fill in the blank, perhaps washing puppies). That'll be X hours."

OK. Enough of me laughing at my friends. Let us return to serious suggestions. I am sure there are many and this forum is the place to air them. Serious.
